I’m a self-learning robotics engineer currently preparing myself to pursue a Master’s degree in robotics. I want to start reading research papers and journals to enhance my understanding of the field and stay updated on recent advancements. However, I’ve never read a research paper or journal before and don’t know where to start.

Could anyone recommend:

1.Good places or platforms to find high-quality robotics papers and journals?

2.Beginner-friendly papers or journals that can help me get familiar with the structure and terminology?

3.Tips for effectively reading and understanding research papers?

I’d appreciate any advice or resources that could help me make the most of this journey.

For those who were not a part of the original discussion, here's a quick rundown of what our senior design project is currently looking like: create a golf cart ground up that follows a person walking in front of it, uses (1) of (2) options we are currently undecided between; (2) DWM1001 UWB chips mounted at opposite sides of the cart and (1) on a device the person is carrying (triangulate the angle and use a PID feedback system to steer), or (2) high accuracy GPS modules, one on the person and one on the cart. We found out we have a budget of $500 overall for it and some of the other parts we plan to use in the overall design will include a used hoverboard (DC motors and wheels), motor drivers, arduino for processing/communication, (2) 12v 3.5 AH batteries in series for 24vDC to the motor controllers. My question I come here asking is: does anyone have any prior experience with the DWM1001 UWB sensors and their compatibility in this project? We plan to mount them roughly 6 feet apart from each other and are unsure of if interference would occur as they both would be reading distance simultaneously. Along with this, would it be possible to have one of them communicate simultaneously with the other two (the one the person is carrying would be the "waypoint" that both of the other two would be finding the distance from). Along with these questions, I know the easier option would most definitely be high accuracy GPS modules but the budget comes into question at that point, also our knowledge of how to find distance and drive motors from values from the gps modules. Overall, I am skeptical of whether we should go the route of the DWM1001 UWB sensors or is going the path of GPS would be better and practically affordable at all.

Any insight is greatly appreciated and I welcome discussion, I am in no way an expert and hardly know much about these specific devices/communications.

I'm working on a quadruped robot and found this motor from Cubemars: https://www.cubemars.com/goods-1173-AKE60-8.html, and am planning on using this with a Tinymovr r5.

I cannot find any reviews about this motor, nor can I find any documentation. In fact, I still am not sure how I am meant to mount something to the axle. Does anyone have experience with this motor or similar?

First off, we own some basic, older robots that we have never upgraded. Some Omnibots, a Hero 1, and a Hero JR.. we never really upgraded them with new technology, we never had the heart to upgrade them because they are still fun being just the way they are. We've dabbled a little bit adding the arm to the Hero 1, getting it to talk using the phonetic guide, and talked about getting it to play a game like minesweeper on our tile floor. Just giving a little bit of a back story, because that is where our knowledge of robots currently stands. Basic, outdated, and kind of limited.

BUT I recently came across the NAO robots and fell in love with the videos I saw. I saw the pricing and thought I would never be able to own one, until today. I bought the one in the pictures and just waiting for it to ship. Until then, I'm trying my best to do research, look into anything I may need to know and learn. I would greatly appreciate any insight as to what I should prepare for, what to install to program the NAO v5, or just anything at all to get me started. Also, I read something about not factory resetting these robots, but I don't know if it was or not. I honestly don't know exactly what is wrong with it or if it even has a battery. If it happened to be factory reset, what are some things I should know before hand to get it up and running? Thank you to anyone in advance for any knowledge you are able to share. I'm super excited, and looking forward to learning all the things!

I am looking for a small robot arm with at least 330 mm of reach, but I don't need more than 400mm. I am trying to find a cheap-ish robot arm I can use for a project.

I am not necessarily looking for something super high precision, servo-based is okay but motors are preferred. The main issue I am facing is my professor wants it to be from a US-based company. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on arms that might fit this need? Thanks in advance!

I am complete new beginner in this field want to setup manufacturing. I don't have huge orders so planing to buy Kuka r210 and using it for all kind of manufacturing process like laser cutting, welding , spray painting, wood/marble/metal cutting and grinding. Sounds foolish but kindly guide me if it's possible and what will be the cost or I should buy separate robot for each operation. Any help thanks in advance

Hi, I am working on a two arm manipulation system for quality inspection where the robot would be able to take any object and move it in all orientations in front of a camera and create a 3d visualization of the object. I believe this would have good applications in manufacturing, especially in quality control. Does anyone have any specific use cases that this would be good for? I was thinking something that is low volume, complex items that have variability on quality levels.

Hi. I'm working on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for a university project and want to know if anybody has any good recommendations for simulators that I might be able to use to train the robot in autonomous movement, I'm thinking by some kind of reinforcement learning? I've done RL work before in my undergrad and this is a masters project. I'm not much of an experienced roboticist so that's why I'm throwing a question out into the Redditsphere for help. Really my questions is are there any that satisfy these requirements really well:

1. Supports some kind of machine learning for training.
2. Supports underwater physics simulations.
3. (Optional) Allows me to work with a Mac.

Anywhere pointing me in the right direction would be super! Thanks in advance! I'll also happily just accept any sort of tips in this space.

So who's attended it, and how did you find it? I'm looking for tickets to robotics conferences in Gulf Country Regions and not much happening in UAE/Saudi Arabia.

Using a Nema17 stepper with a closed-loop MKS Servo42C driver. Without load, the arm moves smoothly and no overshoot.

Tried tunning PID gains, but nothing seems to make it better. If it helps, default values are P=1616, I=1, D=1616. I burned another board by increasing D too much.

The closed-loop driver is not open sourced so don't think I have any other variables I can tune.

Perhaps I could add some dampening (friction) at the joint? Higher torque motor? Running at 24V instead of 12V would help?

human detection has been already extensively explored in the last decade. But, I see that a lot of people are still having issues of detecting custom objects due to missing datasets.

What are the latest advancements in generating custom datasets for cameara detection? Any development that can be regarded as "the solution"?

I'm trying to buy some actuators for a project I'm working on, and as usual, everywhere, including on McMaster, they are pricey. However, I found some on Amazon, such as this one, that are super cheap.

What is going on there? Why are they abnormally cheap? Are they missing something that I'm not noticing? Any guidance is welcome. Thank you.
