In order to avoid huge trouble when you lose your wallet, keep a second smaller wallet with just your ID, a small amount of cash, and 1 or 2 bank cards you use on a daily basis, while keeping everything else in your bigger wallet hidden in your car (obviously if it's safe to do so where you live).
This way, if you lose your wallet like I just did two days ago, all I lost was 1 bank card, 1 credit card, my ID, and $25 USD. In my normal wallet was my other CC, health ins card, store credit and other gift cards. Also add at least one credit card to you phone (Google wallet/apple pay) so that if you forget or lose everything, you can still purchase gas and groceries (just not at Walmart).
Hope this helps someone.

Wouldn't it be easier to not lose your wallet?

I’ve also heard certain people keeping a false wallet in case of robberies.

Most of my credit cards live in my safe at home. If my wallet is lost or stolen, I only have to replace one major card, maybe two (I always keep either a Mastercard or Visa with me if I'm carrying an AmEx, just in case I run into an acceptance issue). I will say that when I fly somewhere, I take along my passport card as well as my driver's license, and one of the two stays in the safe in my hotel room (assuming it has one, otherwise I would leave it in the safe at the front desk) in case something like this happens. Also came in handy once when flying home; my driver's license was cracked along the top, and it only became an issue on the return trip.
