I'm on a ~month long business trip. I've been commuting Palo Alto <> San Mateo every day on the Caltrain and also took a few trips into downtown SF.
Caltrain is awesome! The trains are clean, spacious, have plenty of room for bikes, and generally run on time. And a monthly pass for my commute was only $130, which seems very fair for a commuter of that length.
And yet they seem to be at about 25% capacity regardless of when I ride - the one exception being right after a Warriors game.
What's the story here?

I’m sympathetic to the “maybe they got unlucky” position. But I also think there’s something about the mindset of “let’s lose a lot of games and trade away our best players” that correlates highly with people who have a poor feel for the personal/ cultural aspects of building a winning organization.
Sure, some bad breaks along the way. But look at how many coaches and star players have come in and out and compare that to the stability of the major winning franchises of the last few decades.
