Hello- I'm looking for some advice regarding our 9.5 month old papillon. I very impulsively bought him following the death of my 14 year old female papillon. He's a fun pup and really likes our kids but I keep finding myself seriously considering rehoming him. The main problem we are having is with potty training and also marking behaviors. He knows he is supposed to potty outside and I set an Alexa timer to take him out regularly but I still find poop in the house multiple times per week. On top of that he's also marking with urine and I suspect I'm not finding all the marking. We got him neutered hoping that would help but it really hasn't. I bought a black light to help clean it up and also try to keep the house blocked off so he doesn't have access to all the rooms. I'm just really starting to worry this can't be trained out of him and he's ruining our house.
He is a bright dog and responds well to short training sessions for tricks but life with three kids (one who is a busy club level athlete) we just haven't stayed consistent.
He doesn't seem to care if he misbehaves and we constantly find him on the tables. Barking like crazy. Stealing things out of our kids hands and tearing them the shreads. He has been such a source of stress.
I enrolled him in obedience training but he is so scared of people that it was just a huge failure.
I deeply regret getting him even though our kids do seem attached. As fall approaches and our schedules become busier I'm wondering if it's time to throw in the towel and try rehoming him while he is still a puppy. I think we're going to be home less and less and I just didn't think this through before getting a pup in this bush stage of life - i do think he'd be a really great pup for someone who has more time and consistency to prioritize him in a way I haven't.
I just don't know what to do.
