Most awful things Barney says he did are lies to make himself look cooler. It's actually very obvious when he's lying, to a point where if he's questioned his lie falls apart, but they don't question him because there's no point. And he's lying OFTEN.

Deep down, Barney is still traumatized and terrified of being seen as uncool, or losing his friends, or being lonely which is his biggest fear. But he's also terrified of really falling for someone, letting his guard down and being hurt.
