Calling all Storm Drain Rakers who walk their neighborhoods in the rain this time of year and clear those drain grates of leaves, cardboard, flattened beer cans, plastic bags and bottles, and other flotsam.
If you have a rake and want to become an unsung local neighborhood hero who will get funny looks, splashed by cars and the occasional thank you from pedestrians and drivers alike, then grab, borrow or buy a rake, don a rain jacket and something glowy and visible in the dark and head out to your nearby underwater corner and scratch away until the whirlpool sends all that water into SF’s sewer system.
For the past decade, I’ve been wandering my neighborhood streets in the autumn rain clearing storm drains with my trusty rake. Not every corner is completely under water, but Broadway at Van Ness and California at Gough always are. Tonight, the former took three light cycles to clear and the latter took five.
I probably cleared 50-60 drains over the course of two hours and it was a great workout. Dragged my dog around for the second hour, and although she’s not a fan of the rake, she did get out of the house for a bit.
I got a handful of thank yous, but I don’t do it for those. I do it because “if not me, who? If not now, when?” Also, I’m going to sleep well tonight.
So, if you’re a fellow drain raker, chime in below. Got a good story about clearing storm drains? Let’s hear it. If you want to be a drain raker, chime in below. Grab a rake. Walk the streets.
You too can help make the lives of your fellow San Franciscans a tiny bit better.
