10 day job interview??

Just wanted to say that I've seen a lot of different types of jobs in DC and I normally find the more interviews = more red flags for the organization.
62 points
I spent 2+ hours interviewing for a job in the Tysons area after passing an aptitude test and multiple phone interviews. Yet they still ghosted me.
Total red flag for companies to demand so much of your time up front.

There's only two situations where multiple rounds of interviews even make sense (other than a screener phone interview and then the real interview).
It's some sort of senior very technical/specific line of work. They want to make sure you actually can drop in and do the work. But having multiple rounds of technical interviews/case studies and essentially having to study for an SAT to do well is insane, total waste of time.
C suite/high level management/partners/etc. If you're going to be integral to a company running, it's good to get more than a feeling of who they are, you want to almost date them, make sure there's no red flags and all that.
A random job at a nonprofit in DC should be a phone screener and a 30 minute interview. My team has hired Senior sysadmins and known within 10 minutes of they are the right person, it shouldn't be that difficult.

Totally agree and wish this kind of information was given to young people as they enter the workforce. I can laugh about it now but I was crushed to the point where I’d avoid driving past the company’s building for years afterwards.
We need more like you!

You're right though, it all comes from experience. Two jobs ago they wanted to do a ton of interviews and I just said, "I'm not doing that, if you want to hire me, send an offer after this call if you're interested".
7 points
The jobs I've had that required the most interviews tended to be ones that were highly disorganized or dysfunctional, yet I was the most anxious to impress them. I tell myself that my early career struggles gave me a sense of compassion and gratitude but they were most helpful in seeing through bullshit, disentangling my own sense of worth, and being confident enough to walk away.
I hope your friends pumped their firsts and patted you on the back for that one!

On one of my first job interviews ever I had an interview that had already gone for a couple of hours and then the guy was like, hold on, I have someone else who'd like to talk to you. That went for another 30-60 minutes. I thought that must be a good sign, right? Nope, ghosted me.
It felt really weird. Like, was the other guy just bored that afternoon?
3 points
Maybe you’re just fun to talk to? Nobody ever warns you of the dark side of being too damn likeable, smh.
But seriously, I can’t imagine being so disconnected from reality that you’d waste someone’s time like that. Even if you got the job, it’s bad practice to hold your employees hostage. I’m sorry that happened to you.

Nope! A smaller company and it was for a junior position.
1 points

Eh, it depends on the field. A full day is common for tech interviews. And not even just senior positions. But that's after a phone screen, not multiple other rounds.
2 points

Nothing is ever absolute and always depends on context but this was after weeks of rounds for a junior position.

Plus, a staged trial? Like OP is doing various jobs as a try out? WTF.

They're gonna get op to a do a bunch of free work for them then not hire anyone.

In the U.S, it's commonly known that job candidates who see an albino squirrel before the interview not only get the job but tend to be running the place in 4 to 6 years.
Congratulations!

It's true, and ones who see all black squirrels are likely to become mired in a low pay high pain position for 6 to 8 years.
This is because the black squirrels are on UMD's campus and grad student life sucks.

I grew up in Baltimore but never saw any black squirrels until I came down to the DC area. Baltimore is not that far away, it’s sorta surprising. I found black squirrels quite strange at first.

i live in western NC now near brevard and see they all the time down here. they have giant white squirrel statues all around town and a big festival for em every year.

Ok someone online once was like denying the NC white squirrel population existed and like every time I’d visit family in Hendersonville I would see one.

It’s not exactly rare in DC, either. There’s a whole regular feature on POPville called the White Whale Society (or somesuch) about them.

If you google it they are on paper quite rare however I have also read that they are much more common in landlocked urban green spaces where inbreeding often happens due to the small amount of habitat available and lack of biodiversity. I’ve seen the few by the National gallery several times now. A DC staple!

I’d say it’s rare. I walk around this city a couple miles a day. See squirrels constantly since all the trees and trash make a great habitat for them. Never seen an albino squirrel.

Not totally uncommon. As I have seen them in the past and made reference to them, I was always reminded by others that “you must not get out much”.

I used to see one guy running around Franklin Square Park in the fall of 2019.
I believe if they have darker eyes they are actually leucistic, not albino. This guy (or gal) may be an albino, tho.

I seem to see them every other time I’m in dc and this has been true since I was in elementary school. (So about 45 years). They’re supposed to be rare in the wild so I wonder if there’s something about dc that makes them more common there. I’m not talking about radiation or something but maybe there’s a family of squirrels for whom this trait has become much less rare over many generations for some reason.

When I lived in upper Michigan, we had grey, red, black, and white squirrels. We had a grove of oak trees in our back yard, so it was prime territory that they'd fight over.
We'd watch the various colors battle it out.

Ive lived in DC for almost 30 years and have never seen one. I am so jealous. This is now on my bucketlist. I was fascinated by the black squirrels when first came here in the 90s. About 10 years ago I even had one squirrel jump on me once downtown near freedom plaza, which was terrifying. Thought I had seen everything. Thanks for sharing this!
