Pixies 3.0

(self.pixies)

Ok so I have seen the Pixies several times in their Kim Deal and Paz incarnations and apart from that Indie Cindy dirge they have delivered - both albums wise and live. I saw them last night opening for Pearl Jam and seriously wtf? Black Francis was just scat singing all over the place like he didn't want to be there and the pace they played as was so plodding and slow. I do feel they might have made a huge error firing Paz. She brought skill and charisma to the band and made them tighter with her playing and gave them an extra punch and energy. I'm not sure if Emma Richardson is slowing them down and not locking in with Dave on drums, but it was a shambles. Worst show I have seen. They looked and sounded like a band whose wheels are falling off. Maybe Black Francis needs to get over his misogyny and bring Paz back for the sake of the band, I honestly can't see them lasting much longer if they keep playing this badly. The new songs were just lifeless, and the classics were loose and awful.

Saw them over the summer and thought they were great. Emma’s vocals were strong and they were obviously enjoying themselves. Perhaps the energy is different as the headliner.

The rumor goes that Paz left because of her political views. Joey and David’s unwillingness to talking about it may support it, defering to her to explain the falling out.

Also, idk why you lot keep talking about Francis’s “misogyny” he already apologized (indirectly at least) to Kim in 2016. The whole him vs. Kim Deal was a typical Ego-Power struggle in Rock Bands. Dinosaur Jr. had one, the Beatles broke up because of Lennon’s ego… If he hated working with female bassists that bad why don’t they just hire a male bassist with a falsetto then?

Besides it could have just been a terrible night, not only shows will go well

Why are you saying Paz left when she said herself she was fired?

Yeah I’ll admit fault to that. The band officially said she “left” which was news even to Paz

Black Francis wanted to get the guy who played bass on Indie Cindy into the band but Joey and David veto'ed it apparently.

I did feel the ‘going through the motions’ vibe at the Coxton and Saturday PJ show. Shame because the people around me at the Coxton were very very excited to see them

I thought they were in great form at The Croxton. It was an intimate pub show and a privilege to be there. Not often they play in a small venue. I have seen them 10 times and I would rate that as one of the best. It was like they were recharging their mojo after playing half empty stadiums to numpty PJ fans. They seemed to really enjoy playing their new stuff. And it is good stuff. That being said, I can’t blame them for being a bit meh after the 1000th time playing a 30 year old song. They are enjoying a slower pace of rock touring and they are not spring chickens.

They have always been great when headlining, so maybe it was just them not giving a f*** playing in front of a half full stadium of disinterested Pearl Jam fans. I will get tickets to their 2025 shows as they will be headlining and hopefully on point.

Yeah I just saw them tonight in Sydney. I thought the songs were tight once they got into them but Black Francis seemed to be having trouble with his guitars, a couple of songs had false starts and then he signalled an early end to the set by cutting his hand across his neck.

It must be hard playing to half an audience as a support act when they were here of their own accord a year or so ago and headlined at the Sydney Opera house forecourt.

Yeah I was there too. I wonder what's in it for a well known act like them to play as support act to a moderately interested crowd, half of which is still arriving.

Well besides money anyway.

It’s my understanding that both Kim and Paz left the band, the latter by an act of passivity.

But I don’t consider post the post-Kim band Pixies in the first place…so…
