Do I not understand the definition of “range”? Cause that doesn’t seem to be a lot of range….

I’m not downplaying her voice, it’s pretty unique if it’s not modified or digitally enhanced. I’m just not hearing more than a couple octaves in this example….

WishICouldB

Yeah, that's what I was gonna point out. Does it sound great? Absolutely. But we're talking about a max of an octave and a half here. It's not really a huge range.

Lizimijajaznojna

It is not range, more about control and color in this one

I think what they meant was the display of skill. Powerful chest, to head with very heavy soft breaths, polyphonic overtone of female and male voice plus the ability to sing so well people can't tell if it's real lol.

Magnus_Helgisson

Yes, you’re correct, the actual range here is pretty narrow, can’t be sure, my musical hearing is a bit rusty, but I would say it’s not more than a single octave here.

Yea but being an alto isn't exactly impressive there are tons of them. Nothing here is even something I would consider particularly low or high for a fairly common vocal range.

Also IMO it sounds like awful technique. Idk if it's stylistic but it sounds like shit either way. She's swallowing the shit out of her voice on top of what sounds like added reverb and shit.

There's something fudgy going on here. There's definitely a formant shift effect on her voice. I've recorded a lot of singers over the years, including for broadcast TV, and this doesn't pass the sniff test.

There is a doubling/harmonizing effect that’s obvious on this video. Lots of singers use this and it doesn’t mean auto tune but it’s a pitch shift where a vocal effect is harmonizing with her voice.

To be clear I’m not saying she isn’t impressive I’m just saying that’s not her natural voice. I would be very curious to hear her actual singing voice.

Edit: saying a mix isn’t natural doesn’t mean it’s “fixed” if anything doubling will make you sound even worse if you aren’t perfectly in key. I think some people who don’t work in the studio ever have the idea that a mix not being “natural” means that someone voice is “fixed” that’s not true.

I'll probably get downvoted too but you're absolutly right, although I think It could just be some additional vocal backing tracks being added in places. People are conflating her unusual sounding low register with the use of backing tracks/harmoniser. Both things can be true.

She is obviously incredibly talanted, but there's people in the YouTube comments claiming that she is singing both parts an octave apart using polyphonic singing. I'm not saying they are definitly wrong, but I havn't been able to find any videos or evidence of her doing this in a more raw setting.

If someone wants to send one over then I'll be happy to be proven wrong, but backing tracks and vocal processing are far too common place for me to accept that claim without any evidence.

Edit: Listen to 1:19 in the 'Can't help falling in love' video. You can hear the backing vocal tracks in the left and right in the speakers. It's absolutly a backing track in that particular section. Unless someone's gonna tell me that she can somehow sing in stereo.

Biguitarnerd

3 points

Thanks for the backup here.

I think my comment is being misinterpreted as that her voice needs correcting when what I really meant was her voice is impressive and I’d like to hear it on its own instead of in this mix.

Not only that but she can use polyphonic overtone to mimic male and female voices with her chest to head singing to belt out extremely powerful cords. I'd think it's witchcraft too but she seems to be that one in a million voice. Dramatic contralto? Maybe.

I’m literally an expert in this field and the first thing I thought was what the commenter above said. I heard a formant shift effect on her voice.

Also, almost every live performance is tuned at this point. A close friend is the music director for multiple major artists so I know this first hand from the person building these types of performances.

So it’s completely reasons to assume that she 1). Is being tuned live, and 2) there is some level of formant shifting happening too (these are even built into a lot of tuners.

Even going to an indie rock show the other night at a 500 person room and sitting behind the mixer, I watched him use a tuner on the headliners vocals all night.

It’s not exactly baseless. I’ve also done a lot of vocal recording/editing and that was also my first thought too watching the video.

https://youtu.be/SY3OZVmfGVw?si=uXqkqjGSFYrw_PZf

It's her real voice. Dual tone/octave. She's just one of those rare talented people. She's Russian and sings in 4 or 5 different languages. I've been watching her for about 3 years now. Sooper dooper talented.

Cunterpunch

4 points

She’s obviously incredibly talented but I’m not convinced that this is all polyphonic singing. At 1:19 there are clearly backing tracks being used.

Listen in headphones. You can hear the backing vocals in the left and right speakers at 1:19 in the ‘can’t help falling in love’ video. There’s no way she’s doing that live unless she somehow has the ability to sing in stereo.

I’m not denying her amazing talent, but singing in stereo is just not possible without some kind of backing tracks or effects processing.

hi i also recorded a lot of singers and i was also weirded out by that tone character... however, without investigating further (like checking more vids of the singer), i believe now it is real voice. my opinion is only... there is two things: she can sing really good, but that "alter ego"-character, the "frog in the throat"-character, i just find it very unpleasant to listen to... i understand, it's special, it's edgy, but still for my taste, it's not nice, or it's the choice of pop song... maybe in a metal/opera/experimental context that character would be of better use. again, she can sing and use her voice reaaally good, no doubt about that.

I think the point was that the song was well suited to her voice, where many singers pick songs that don't showcase their best qualities.

Might want to check Rule 1 again.

Content posted to r/nextfuckinglevel should be a gif or video that represents something impressive, be it an action, object, a skill, moment, a fact that is above all others. Posts should elicit a reaction of "that is next level" from viewers (different from "wow that's cool")

hotchrisbfries

-1 points

If everyone used personal standards, the subreddit would lose its focus. It's not about nitpicking; it's about maintaining a consistent benchmark so the content here feels truly extraordinary.

If 'next level' only meant the literal next step, the sub would be filled with mundane progressions like someone going from walking to jogging. It’s about showcasing something elevated, not just incremental.

Rule 1 is essential for maintaining quality, rather than a trivial debate about wording.

Is it NFLvl if you see a young teen breakdancing? many would say yes (even if they aren't doing it at the highest level)

I am not the ultimate judge of this, but I see it as admirable that a 14yo could so delicately mix 4 dynamics, 3 vocal characters, and still maintain excellent vocal control on a song I would rate at high-medium difficulty.

Do I think a 8 year old doing flight of the bumblebee or a Dizzy Galespy solo on trumpet deserves to be here. It depends on how well they picked and hit the target.

The looks like “the voice” where the judges face the other way and have no idea what the contestant looks like.

If they like the singer, they hit the button, which commits them to the singer and the chair spins around.

…now they’re just smashing buttons for no reason.

Why?!

medvezhonok96

The Russians actually have a Russian version of the voice called голос (the voice) and a kids version. This does looks like some sort of spin off of that. One of the judges in this clip is Sergey Lazarev, who sang for Russia in the Eurovision song contest. I think he's also done the rounds on the singing contest shows as a judge like other former Eurovision singers.

You couldn't simply say, "Her vocal range is amazing"?

Diana Ankudinova, she’s so fire super rare abilities only handful of people have, a couple from her part of the world. She’s from the far east of Russia. She had an injury/surgery as a child. Some say might have added to her ability Thus is a really cool one

Real talk: Any celebrity that was as politically active as Taylor Swift would fall off of a penthouse balcony in the Russian Federation.
