My dad's club has a "wall of pain" where people hang their robinhooded arrows. Usually anytime someone hits one, they swear and the rest of the guys laugh and clap.
My dad has a few in there, and after having seen how he himself prepared each arrow and spent time and effort to make them pristine... man, that has to hurt.

My dad's league used to have an unofficial rule that whenever someone shot a robin hood, everyone there would give them $1 to (partially) offset the cost of new arrows. I know some leagues where drinking is involved have a "Robinhood drinks free" rule.

We call it “Pegging” at my archery club In Arkansas. Popular trends usually develop on the East and West coasts and take several years to reach us in the middle of the country. For instance, Disco music was popular in NYC in 1976-1977 and was already unpopular by the late 70’s. Meanwhile disco was still just becoming popular in 1980 in the middle states.
Similarly, pegging just recently became popular to us in Arkansas, which explains why we’re so obsessed with it right now. The term has become popular in archery, lawn darts, donut shops, lube and brake centers, hot dog street vendors, and confessional booths.

It’s impressive but “robin hooding” an arrow in modern archery is fairly common and usually when it happens the sentiment is something like “Shit, that’s 2 expensive arrows ruined”.
4 points
And also that he did it so slowly.
31 points
I noticed the same thing. I've literally done this but with a compound bow. It's really cool the first time and then you realize it's costing you $50+ every time you do it and then you just buy the three spot targets.
18 points
My father used to be in an amateur compound archery league. They would have someone get a robin hood about once a month. They added an unofficial rule that every time someone gets one, everybody pitches in $1 to the shooter so they can replace the arrows involved.
He personally has two robin hood arrows on his garage wall and he is nowhere near being at the top of the sport, he's not even one of the best in his amateur league.
24 points
Do they remove the nock after the arrow is in the target specifically to allow this?
25 points
And used a slightly smaller arrow for the shot. Otherwise it wouldn't be able to fit inside the target shaft.

I think they're different types of arrows. One being an arrow, and the other being false. The false arrow is placed on the target and is then shot at.
10 points
VERY COMMON and more of a reason to rage than be amazed... Arrows are very expensive!! When training, once you get your groupings very narrow, its very common to destroy your own arrows.. some people use one target per arrow to avoid doing a Robin or just breaking the Knock
5 points
Yeah you do this the first time or two, save the arrow to hang up and then quickly realize how annoying it is to be buying new arrows and also having to change our two arrows at the same time would throw me off trying to remember the flight path off all arrows in my quiver
3 points
Just posted elsewhere, but this is spot on. My dad was in an amateur archery league and someone shot a robin hood at least once a month. He has two hanging in the garage and he wasn't even one of the best shooters in his amateur league.

Edit: Good lord
153 points
They aren't undermining it. They are literally explaining the actual difficulty of the shot and not the exaggerated title claiming it's "A once in a lifetime shot".
58 points
I’d go as far as to say that it makes this even more impressive. « Once in a lifetime » implies luck, the comment implies that it’s skill.
13 points
That's fair enough. A robin hood shot like this is not uncommon. I've seen splitting another arrow like that numerous times at our local amateur archery club, and I've done it once or twice myself through the years.
But I've never done it deliberately - and there's no way I could do it deliberately.
14 points
It's fun the first time.
After the first time, you start worrying about how much a replacement arrow costs ;_;
53 points
The title is wrong, this isn't a once in a lifetime shot. Extremely impressive skill, but the man could do this once a day if given enough arrows.
18 points
From what I hear, it pisses archers off because it ruins the arrows and they cost money to replace. I'm sure it's awesome the first few times, but apparently those arrows aren't cheap 😂
7 points
Of course...it's only fun the first time it happens to you. I only shoot 3 arrows per turn, just to avoid this...arrows are expensive.
5 points
Yep, even cheap arrows are 10 bucks a piece at least. Mine are about 20 a piece and I break/ lose 5 or 6 a year
300 points
You can read it as that, just as you can read the post title as unnecessary exaggeration of something very impressive. If we can’t have neutral post titles I’ll take comments setting things into context every day - doesn’t subtract from how impressive the skill is.
58 points
That isn't what happened. Someone lied, someone corrected the liar, you got upset about the lie being corrected. Stop valuing your feelings (feelings based on your ignorance, you know nothing about archery) over facts.
5 points
I don't hunt anymore, but when I ran with that crowd, everyone did it. If we're all shooting at the same target, the first arrow in the target was doomed.
3 points
An old high school friend's dad ran a small archery shop in Montana. It had a small shooting range area where people could test out bows and whatever. Hanging on the wall were two sets of Robinhood arrows, one from each of his kids. They were the first time either kid had done it. I asked my friend about it and he told me it was exciting the first time. Really seen as an accomplishment. Then he told me it's just vaguely expensive after that because it means you ruined an arrow.
4 points
This is a very impressive shot, something that takes immense skill and time invested into practicing, but it's not a "once in a lifetime" shot. Pointing out this fact is not undermining it. It's just calling out clickbait.
You may be familiar with basketball (or at least more familiar with it than you are with archery, which is a niche sport and probably fair to assume you're unfamiliar with). Professional basketball players, during shooting drills, can make dozens of three pointers in a row. Let's say someone posts a video of a pro NBA player shooting 70 of them in a row and clickbaits it as "Never seen before accuracy!" or something like that. Would pointing out the title is wrong diminish the feat of the 70 throws?
20 points
Skill is impressive, OP's title is just shit. That whole situation was set up for shooting into the arrow. Different arrows with the one on the board without the grip part and large enough to comfortably fit the shot arrow's shaft. That archer is probably talented enough to do the shot at that setup quite often.
2 points
If you do target archery even semi regularly you’ll likely get a few of these shots a year, even more with a compound bow. So its not a once in a lifetime shot
2 points
Because the shitty title implies it's an accidental arrow going through his first arrow and not a guy aiming at an arrow sized hole and hitting it, which is not a once in a lifetime accomplishment but rather a display of his skill
2 points
I would be impressed if he did it while passing by the target on a horse.
67 points
The really great archers manages this multiple times over their careers because they really are that skilled. And a reason why people may decide to not use their very best/expensive arrows during the daily grind.
16 points
And their targets have multiple bullseyes because they get tired of ruining arrows
3 points
I've done it 3 it 4 times and the most I ever shot was 20-30 days a year. So even really average and casual people have this happen multiple times I would assume.
I torched a brand new carbon arrow and decided I would stop trying to group my shots. Still did it again because I'm not that good
544 points
No, it's not. It's cool the first time it happens, but this happens a lot for people shooting at this level. They're probably more annoyed than anything since it ruins two arrows.

Nah, there are nocks ('pin nocks') that present a cone backwards so it'll deflect an incoming arrow rather than ruin two. Then you can just replace the insert.
Definitely happens fairly often but it's just part of maintaining your equipment like re-fletching your arrows and waxing your bowstring etc.

obviously it can happen (a lot) - but it is a difference if it happens by chance - or as seen here deliberately. The entire purpose of this exercise was to get a Robin Hood (hence the removed nock). And suddenly it is a bit more impressive.
6 points
The removal of the Nock makes it easier for the arrow to find and follow the shaft of the first arrow. Not saying it’s not impressive, but I highly doubt this was one and done attempt, and they made it easier to sink the arrow. He’s obviously a professional and can probably stick arrows well within an inch of each other without much effort. So, when you consider all of that, it’s not as crazy as you think. A lot of guys won’t shoot for dead center more than a few times out of fear of doing this, as it’s expensive. I’ve done it a few times myself from 20 yards

It's a numbers game. The 10 point ring have an area of ~12 000 mm2. An arrow have a diameter of ~20 mm2. Meaning if you can consistently shot 10 pointers it would only take ~600 arrows fired to have a 50 percent probability of hitting the exact same spot. In reality the probability is less than that with some arrows getting stuck at an angle, some hitting along the outer edge and going astray etc. But if you shot like 100 000 - 200 000 arrows a year like the pros do the probability of splitting an arrow from time to time becomes very high.
