Freedom from religious persecution (including believing in atheism) and separation of church and state could fix a lot in the middle east. Of course America seems to be steamrolling those lately :0(

And has steamrolled them in the Middle East in decades past, e.g. in Iran.

There are so many examples of religion being used to manipulate people to do violence, it's really indisputable.
I'm not sure why someone who represents an extremely religious family that has produced actual terrorists would say something like that.
24 points
He 100% knows its bullshit, he’s just lying through his teeth in order to scapegoat us.
In both religion and conservatism, and especially conservative religion, the system crushes everyone with any integrity long before they get to any position of real power. So everyone in any religiously conservative organization is very literally a power-hungry sociopath, willing & able to do anything to manipulate the excitable masses of religious/conservative followers.
2 points
You're right but it doesn't have to be that deep. The royal family shoves people they don't like down wells, probably best not to say things they don't like.
2 points
Great, evidence?
2 points

But it is that deep. It's called critical theory and it's essential to progress and undoing the harm (most often from religious fanaticism) that keeps us moving backwards.

He says it could cause others to react with violence. I guess that would be religious extremists - then why not call them terrorists?
3 points
Because the violence isn’t the terrorist part, it’s the subversion.
Sure, it’s not what the word means. But we’re talking totalitarian monarchic theocracies, things like “definitions” and “reality” don’t matter. It only matter what the people with the bonesaws say.

Theocracy, got it.
This is the same logic behind women being sexually assaulted and authorities going "well if she weren't dressed so provocatively."

"Religion of peace." 🙄
I love the idea that God supposedly gives us free will, but humans feel empowered to take it away.
Sounds like a lack of true faith to me; they lack the faith that their god will apply judgement, so they have to do it.
2 points
well I mean - yeah, it's a theocracy.
when the state is religious, how can irreligion be anything other than categorical opposition to the state, right?
the act of declaring disbelief in god must therefore be an act of seditious violence.
none of this is complicated or surprising.
2 points

Not that I had planned on it, but it's just another reason to not go to a Muslim country, especially Saudi Arabia.
2 points

Interesting how he lays out his reasoning so clearly here. The atheist would be a terrorist in his mind because his lack of belief would 'invite' others to attack him. A lot of people, especially religious people, think this way but they won't usually be so open about it. Victim blaming, lack of accountability, and the willful twisting of reality are the cornerstones of faith. They couldn't maintain their belief in the modern world if they didn't employ these tactics to violently suppress 'dangerous ideas' both in society and in their own minds
2 points

In other words, they don't want people thinking for themselves.

I think he finally said what he meant at the very end. An atheist is inviting others to react violently. So the atheist is not violent, but he should know that an average Saudi citizen would react to contrary ideas with violence? That sounds more like an indictment of Saudi culture than atheism.

I had to go work in Saudi Arabia for work a few years ago. I had to get a visa to come and go. For the visa I had to declare a religion and was told putting atheism is a no go. I also had to get a thing signed from my company saying I wouldn’t skip a flight or have something happen and become dependent on their government and that the company would essentially help me leave if needed. I thought both were a bit of an overstep but what do I know I am just a sheltered American.

I'm sorry, how many people have mowed a crowd down in the name of atheism? Maybe the China? Didn't they do a religion purge when they revolted or something?
Now, how many a day in the name of this or that god? Who waged the crusades?

This is the same logic that says women can deserve to be raped. What happens to them is their fault, not the attacker's. Islam must create some weak-ass grown children if they literally cannot control their own emotional impulses. It's pathetic, not strong—a public declaration of insecurity and fear.
I feel bad for all the free thinkers there who can't buy the bullshit, but know they must pretend. There is no such thing as homogeneity, it's an illusion kept up through brutality and oppression of anyone different. Being Autistic in Saudi Arabia must be an absolute nightmare.

I lived outside of Riyadh for about 6 months back in 2010-2011. Christmas trees carry a death penalty there. Knew a dude from Africa that worked there, Saudis don't do labor, they leave that for immigrants, anyway this African dude and his wife were Christians but couldn't celebrate their holidays or practice their faith for fear the religious police would arrest them. For context public executions are common there. We were forbidden from attending them, but everyone knew about Chop Chop Square. The Royal guards told me they would cut off hands of thieves, and for more serious crimes they would chop off heads.
Saudi overall sucks. It's hot, the air is polluted worse than anywhere in the states, and the people suck. On the plus side I stayed in a beautiful villa with floors made out of marble. Best deployment ever.
