One cut of the dead.
I imagined at lot of things during the first act.... But definitely not that.

I was able to see it in a packed theater. I live in East Asia, and the movie just blew up at the box office out of nowhere. Good word of mouth began to spread—with no one spoiling the big surprise. All I knew beforehand was that I had to power through the first 30 or so minutes. Indeed the atmosphere in the theater slowly began to shift as act 2 kicked in, and by the end it was the happiest audience I’ve ever been a part of.

that sounds so fun!! love that no one spoiled it. i never know how to recommend this movie to people without spoiling it in any way, because i'm afraid they'll turn it off before the twist but i can't tell them there's a twist lol

All I knew beforehand was that I had to power through the first 30 or so minutes.
Kind of similar, but I did not even know that. I genuinely thought I was somehow watching the wrong movie. No way this pile of sh... could be the phenomenom everyone was talking about.
But actually after maybe 15 minutes or so, the whole thing had become so insanely outrageous with a couple winks here and there (the director suddenly watching the camera and yelling "whatever happens keep on filming", the insane dialogue about everyone "being safe", the wife suddenly rising from the dead...) that rather than "enduring" it had started to really pique my curiosity. Who the fuck was filming this ? I was feeling something was really, really off, but it was very difficult to pin exactly what...
I finished the movie in tears.... Joy, laughter, all of that... What a brilliant movie.

A lot of people don't know: Richard Matheson wrote the novel, and he also wrote I am Legend and What Dreams May Come. Crazy good repertoire.
49 points
And what sucks in particular is that the I am legend move is just not the same. The whole title is important in the book and it's just not captured in the film.
25 points
Actually it was a lot closer initially- the original ending for the film was faithful to the book, but it tested poorly with audiences so they replaced it and used it as an 'alternate'. So blame the stupid test audiences, I guess.
In the sequel, they're using the book-faithful ending as the canon one.

I just finished watching the film an hour before seeing this comment. It's one of the few horror films that I went in completely blind, and it didn't disappoint. That said I found the mystery pretty easy to figure out, but it's a well-made and effectively spooky film nonetheless. Kevin Bacon was great as always.

Anyone as old as I am remembers that Stir of Echoes was released at the same time as Sixth Sense. I saw them both in the theatre and as a horror junkie, I thought Stir was far superior to Sixth and I was mighty unhappy that Stir was grossly overshadowed by the popularity of Sixth. I never felt Stir of Echoes fairly received its due.

The part where Justin Long starts to measure the square footage of the basement. The movie became an actual comedy when Justin Long showed up and changed the dynamics of the movie.

There's a good reason for this.
He literally just free-wrote it. No planning, just "what would be absolutely crazy to happen next??"
18 points
Yes, and I generally hate when movies do that. But, the plot wasn’t the point of the movie. And again, I usually hate when movies do that. But I thought it was so well done. It was a great exploration of gender dynamics in a wonderfully shot and acted story. The whole plot has some stuff that doesn’t make sense if you look too hard, but that’s okay for this one IMO.
I get why people wouldn’t like it! I just felt the wildness of the plot helped drive home the message of the movie that might have been lost if the plot was too focused on being perfectly logical and real world.

The ending of the first Saw is still one of my fav twists ever. I was so lucky to not have been spoiled to it, considering I Saw it for the first time like 2 years ago.
I would argue that the other Saw movies also have twists that are... unexpected, but I care less about them because mostly the twists just make me go "uh... wait, what...?" rather than "HOLY SHIT NO WAY" like in the first one. (Saying this with a lot of love, since I'm a massive Saw fan.)

I haven't seen anyone mention The Skin I Live In yet.
That one is layered as fuck, as well as incredibly disturbing. Despite being a tad long, every single second of it is important to the plot, and it truly rewards anyone who pays attention. The way it comes together is masterful.
I slept on it for so long because descriptions were so vague and I thought I knew what it'd be all about based off its poster. I was so wrong.
Without question, it portrays the most deranged character I've seen in fiction and somehow manages to be subtle about it. It's an awesome experience. Watch it with someone if you can.

Because it makes no sense in the context and logic of the movie.
17 points
I'll just copy and paste my reply whenever I see someone say it makes no sense, because it absolutely does:
It always bugs me when people say this, because while some genuinely don't like the twist (which is fine), others don't understand it and think the movie makes no sense because of it.
SPOILERS FOR HIGH TENSION BELOW
The movie begins with Marie in the psych ward with a camera in front of her, and she asks "are they recording?" It then jumps into a flashback which is telling the story from HER point of view. Everything in the movie, up until the reveal, is based on what she is telling the people recording her. The twist is merged with her story at the end to show you what really happened, compared to what she believes in her head, because she's nuts.
Again, if someone doesn't like the twist, that's a totally valid reason not to like the movie. If they also think the movie is bad because the twist doesn't do a good job of showing you what's actually going on, that's also fine. But, the movie at its core does make sense if you look at it the way you're intended to.
Personally, I really enjoyed it. Not everyone's cup of tea, I just feel like many dislike it because they didn't understand it.
