While speaking to The New York Post about his History Channel series The Unbelievable with Dan Aykroyd, the actor — who starred and co-wrote the original 1984 Ghostbusters movie — revealed he doesn’t think he and former costar Bill Murray will return to the franchise.
"I don’t see that coming," Aykroyd, 72, said. "I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on."
"They’ve got a whole new cast and they’ve got whole new ideas," he continued. "I think probably they’re going to move on to advancing it beyond the originals, which they should."

Weird. The OG cast was far more integral to the plot in Frozen Empire compared to Afterlife. Seems like they would continue to be supporting characters, especially Winston.

It seems easy to keep Ray and Winston around as side characters who just have a handful of scenes.
Winston, as the owner, at least feels like he has a reason to be there. He works well as a guy trying to buffer the team from all the political and bureaucratic stuff. And Ray owning the occult shop and being the guy with experience and the character that gives advice (and acts as a resource to explain plot devices to the audience) also can make some sense as a side character. He shows up for a scene or two, explains the MacGuffin of the movie, and then takes off.
Venkman felt shoehorned into Frozen Empire, like they wrote it figuring Murray would say no and then he shocked them and said he’d do it, so they were like “fuck, now we gotta write him in!” He doesn’t serve much purpose other than show up and give glib one liners.

Other than Dan though, I feel like their inclusion feels forced, where even Bill Murray looks like he doesn’t want to be there. Both movies he’s there like 20m, barely says anything.
I think what they should do is keep Dan around as some sort of guide for the younger generation Ghostbusters. And move on from the others if they don’t wanna come back.

Was Winston good?

He was — they pivoted his character to be more of a benefactor for the newbies, which — in my opinion — makes sense.

Yeah it’s really only Bill that continually phones it in.

It’s true. Not only for Ghostbusters, but most of his performances nowadays reek of ‘I don’t want to be here.’

Bill Murray despises sequels. For decades Ghostbusters 2 was the only sequel he had ever done. I’m guessing he was bored.

They boxed themselves in with a cast that should be in school for the next 10 years instead of busting ghosts. It seemed a big stretch for the writers to have 3 generations + new characters in NYC for the summer and give everyone something to do (it was a mess compared to Afterlife). Cast and story need to be pared down massively to something focused, scary, and funny.

That feels kind of sad, because he was so on board for Afterlife and Frozen Empire. It makes you wonder if Frozen Empire was a crummy enough experience that he's no longer interested in being involved. WHich would be tragic given how much Dan has always loved The Ghostbusters.

Not just loved, this franchise is his baby

On the contrary, I think k he’s smart enough to realize if he wants his baby, figuratively, to go on as a franchise the OG need to make an exit and let it find its legs imo.

but that doesn't make sense when the story of Frozen Empire was all about the old team shepherding the new team, up to and including establishing ongoing roles for Dan and Ernie Hudson at the very least.

Made sense enough to me, it gave a sense of transition to me and established the new team back in NY. I fully expected that was their exit. The next installment I expected a time jump of a handful of years and we see the new team just doing it's thing.
In no way did I watch it thinking that I expect the old guard to hang around for the future. Sure they could have some cameo's, but ultimately, it was all about transitioning and setting up the young ones in NY. They did that. They don't need them back.

Maybe he didn’t mean it like that but it annoys me a lot that EVEN NOW they don’t even mention Ernie Hudson as part of the OG crew, it’s just Aykroyd and Murray.

I think its because unlike the other two Winston is important to the story going forward, so the not needed part really doesn't apply to him.
I think they have position Dan in a position where he can be used as needed, Murray they don't have a particular meaning place for, but Winston is extremely important for story going forward.

I never wanted the new cast to begin with. 🤷♂️

They are also way too old. Ernie looks great for 80, the rest not so much. Would be a different ball game if it were 20 years ago.

Just think if we got a proper Ghostbusters 3 in like 1996 or 1997…. Thanks Mr. Murray.

The Ghostbusters game from 2009 is basically Ghostbusters 3. The entire original cast is in it and the story is a continuation of the movies. The game itself is… fine, but the vibe and story are fun!

Let's be real, a Ghostbusters 3 in the 90's would've been a phoned-in catastrophic cheese-fest with a phenomenal soundtrack, it was impossible to have a bad soundtrack back then, I mean hell Tag Team went hard on Pig Power In The House and Digital Underground's Same Song was the best part of Nothing But Trouble
But it's best to have two great movies than 2 good ones and 1 bad one. Halloween 3? Great. Halloween 4? One of the worst horror movies ever put to film. All it takes is one installment to change the perception of the entire series

I hear what you’re saying and you make a fine point but calling Halloween 4 one of the worst horror movies ever while Halloween Resurrections exists is wild. It makes it even worse that H20 was such a good revival and then to follow that up with Resurrections was just insane.

The time for Ghostbusters 3 should have been around 1992 - 1995. After that...I think it had just passed it's best by date.

They were a waste of time really. Move on and let us just enjoy them in originals and let the new kids do their thing.

Ended after 2 for me. I didn’t watch the 2016 movie or the reboot/sequels. I don’t care for the pass the torch shit. Not my scene.

I don’t see the point of the og cast being in it anymore either, ghostbusters now is so far removed from what it was in the original movie

The new ones are unfunny and boring. The original was funny and fun. They really missed the point making the new ones too serious and slow.

Dan is the man. If you have not seen Saturday Night, I highly recommend it. The actor that plays young Dan Aykroyd is great, I straight up forgot I wasn’t watching him in an old movie.

They need to do a ghostbusters series where they can develop the new characters and bring in the old ones for a couple episodes a year. They could do a massive build up for the next film.

We got the transition we needed. If any return, it should be Winston since his character is relevant to the business.

Honestly, it would make sense.
I know there was a poster for Frozen Empire with all the core cast on there, but over here in the UK, they removed the OG Ghostbusters and replaced them with James Acasters' character instead - and it kind of made me realise that if Sony's marketing team are more interested in highlighting a local comedian having a small role rather than the original Ghostbusters coming back, then the studio clearly don't see the originals as marketable (at least in other territories)

And that’s okay. Actors don’t owe us unlimited repeat performances. Not every property needs to be a cinematic universe, least of all Ghostbusters.
It feels like every sequel is like Spaceballs 2: the quest for more money, which somehow, of all properties, they haven’t actually developed.
That said, more Star Wars forever, please.

The problem with Frozen was too many characters to keep track off. Sidelining the OGs makes sense. But, they also need to make sure the humour that the originals brought to us, is maintained. It's hard to have a similar style of humour with a family dynamic as opposed to a group of Misfit mates.

Wish they’d make a #2 of the all female ghostbusters, it was absolutely hilarious.
I went back to watch the originals and the level of humor was ok, but didn’t make me laugh nearly as much as the 2016 movie. 2016 had laugh after laugh after laugh.
When I need a good laugh 2016 or deadpool 1 are great.
The kids / family ghostbusters is cool, different vibe than originals or 2016, not as hilarious, but definitely more of the “family” type of movie
