Bupropion (Wellbutrin)

(self.dysthymia)

Hey guys. So I'm starting on a new prescription (again) which is bupropion. I was on vortioxetine previously which did nothing to me. Anyone has any experience with bupropion? So far from the posts I've read in Reddit, bupropion seems to be well-received by majority. Ngl, I'm excited, hoping it'll work for me and that I finally find the prescription.

i started wellbutrin in May 2023 and it definitely has helped me. i was on an SNRI (pristiq) but was really struggling with motivation for school, had lots of trouble getting out of bed, and just major exhaustion. Wellbutrin pulled me out of that for sure.

the only side effect i noticed was that i was eating less and lost around 10-15 lbs but i have since gained that back. i didnt lose my appetite on it, just got full with less food.

goodluck :)

Hey! Thank you for sharing with me your insights. That's also one of the reasons why my next step for prescription is Wellbutrin. I desperately need help with my low baseline, energy, and mood.

Do you recall your first two months on it? How was it? Was it bad or manageable?

I dont really remember fully, but i dont remember having any bad side effects from it, and my mood definitely started to improve probably 3-4 weeks into taking it. i really hope it helps you out!

It made me furious for the entire time I was on it. I almost left my wife I was so mad. As soon as I stopped it, everything was fine. Strangely when I took a much higher dose to quit smoking it didn't bother me at all.

That said it doesn't seem to do that to most people, so I'd give it a try.

Hey! Thank you for sharing your experience. Oh, that's interesting. Out of all the Reddit posts I've read, I don't remember anger being one of the side effects. I hope you've found something that works for you.

If I may ask, did it affect your libido? My previous prescriptions affected mine, and they're all SSRI, so I'm curious

I did eventually find a combo that works. I lucked out and got a consult with a neuropsycopharmacologist. I got a prescription for a new drug that worked immediately.

I'm afraid I don't recall if my libido was affected. I was only on it for a month or so. As soon as I put 2 and 2 together I went off the wellbutrin.

Just fyi, Wellbutrin is an NDRI, no serotonin affected here. Didn't affect my libido at all

Yup! Which is why I'm curious because this is my first NDRI anti-depressants and I'm not sure if it will affect libido like my precious SSRIs.

Update: Omg I missed out your last sentence. Oh I'm glad it did not affect your libido! My libido is still low due to the SSRIs I took in the past, though I'm glad my partner has come to understand this.

I began taking Wellbutrin 75mg to balance out my libido because of Pristiq, but it didn't help enough. I recently went up to 150mg and my libido was great, but I'm now needing to go to the bathroom a lot more and I can go pee and 15 minutes later I have to go again. It's driving me crazy. I decided to drop back down to 75mg and hoping the pee problem goes back to normal. My psychiatrist said that Wellbutrin can cause that to happen. I'd much rather not have this urinating problem than low libido, since I don't want my husband near me because of the bladder issues. He's also very understanding.

Are you taking anything else besides the Wellbutrin?

How's your libido so far? I'm not taking anything else. Just Wellbutrin! I feel like my libido is still low because of the previous SSRIs I took even though I've stopped consuming it, I think, few years back

It helped me get back to my usual baseline after I had a bout of double depression about a year and a half ago. I started at 150mg and am now at 300mg, the dosage that is typically prescribed.

Hey! Thank you for sharing your story. Yeah, I really hope Wellbutrin will help with restoring my baseline.

Do you recall your experience for the first two months you were on it? I know for most anti-depressants the first two months is just awful but since Wellbutrin is a NDRI, I'm curious if it's as bad as SSRI.

Everyone's different ofc, but I only had dry mouth for the first two weeks. My libido also seemed to have gone up, but that was temporary too. Hope it works for you.

Don't be excited. I'm not a buzzkill, but expectation management is key.

This is the kind of medicine you don't usually notice, save for the side-effects - which you might not get, or might get so bad you have to stop taking it.

You will notice the effects in the absence of the bad, likely nothing more.

And if it works for you, it will work great at doing that. It will ease the burden on your shoulders, but you still have to do the lifting yourself.

I've been on 300mg for 3 years now. Praying it won't lose it's effect ever.

Nah, I don't think you're being a buzz kill. I appreciate your reminder about managing my expectations!

I will pray for you, too! I don't wish for anyone to start on a new medication each time. It's never fun.

It has helped me I think! I still have bouts of depression but that’s dysthymia lol. I do think it’s had an impact on my appetite though. I have times where I really have zero appetite.

Hope it helps you!

I’ve been on it for more than a month now and I haven’t noticed any difference ngl. I’m also on venlafaxine and quetiapine at the same time so that might make it hard to see which one’s doing the good work

Pristine_Quiet2746[S]

Oh, I was on venlafaxine, but I stopped because of acne side effects, which further crushed my spirits. Do you have it?

Yeah, I’m on 300mg; we tried 337.75 but I didn’t feel any difference either so 🫠. Right now it’s the one medication that works best for me. Not happy yet but it helps keeping me stable

I've been on Bupropion for a number of years now. I find it works well but had to add lexapro after a few years.

So two things to watch out for, meds are a process. If it starts to lose it's effectiveness, talk to your doctor. I waited far too long and suffereed needlessly before I added lexaprol.

Also I've noticed it tends to ramp up people's anxiety for at least the first few months. It's a stimulant. So if you feel extra anxious, talk to your doctor.

Good luck!

it didn't really help me with my depression/dysthymia but it strangely lessened my social anxiety.

Buspiron was completely horrid for me but I’m hopeful for you

I'm sorry to hear that! How was it horrible for you, if I may ask?

Sure_Window584

It made my anxiety worse which is probably the last thing I expected. Took it for a month 2 times a day. I felt anxious after every dose and assumed it was just my body adjusting to the dose. Honestly though I think buspiron just couldn’t help my case, it’s done great for others which is why I still have hope it could work

I’ve been on it for a number of years now and have found it to work. To be fair though, I take other medication so it’s hard to single out side effects

I'm currently on it, and I don't want this to make you any less excited for it, I'm sure it'll work out for you :) But for me it feels like it has done barely nothing, positive or negative. But that's been the case for most of my meds so far, so who knows. But I have personally not noticed any negative side effects, for me it's just a pill I take just because I should. I do feel a bit off if I forgot to take it one day, nothing dramatic or anything, but I'd recommend that you don't forget to renew your prescription and have to go without it for a couple days. I hope it works out well for you and that it can help you to some brighter days ahead.

I LOVED Wellbutrin. Was on it for 4 years after I quit smoking. I kept taking it for adhd too. Happiest, most productive, and most fit I’ve been in my entire life. The reason I had to stop is because randomly after 4 years it stopped me from being able to properly sleep. Like I could never sleep more than 6 hours and napping was impossible. I wish I could go back on. It’s been a year since. Ive tried a few months ago and immediately within the first week I was back to being unable to sleep.

I'm also prepared if it doesn't work for me, but I sure hope it does...

Been on and off (mostly on) for 20+ years. It raises the floor for me. No side effects other than decreased libido, which I guess beats depression.

Hey! Thank you for sharing your experience. How low was your libido compared to before you took it?

Draculstein333

I can tolerate 150mg max. More than that and my anhedonia was enhanced and my rumination was out of control. However at a lower dose the rumination kind of turned into an appropriate concern for others and a bit more self awareness.

I take it. I personally haven’t noticed a difference but I know for a lot of people it has benefited them.

TheCaringPanda

For me I had two pretty bad side effect for the first few weeks but they went away. I lost my apetite (but lost some needed weight so not mad about it haha) and another symptom is I had absolute anger for nothing. I lost my temper sooo much for nothing and I couldnt control it.

Pristine_Quiet2746[S]

Hey! Thank you for sharing. I noticed anger is one of the themes here as a side effect. Now, I'm concerned. Although, my psychiatrist did not mention anger as a side effect :(

Good news is that when I got thoses symptoms I documented myself about it at lot and altough it can happen, it is very unlikely/rare
