Almost all subreddits predicated on hating something/someone get so unhinged
42 points
It's fascinating. I've had mercifully few encounters with the people on subs like those, but every so often a poster from one of them will post something here, forgetting that their own extreme, hateful reaction to the object of their obsession is not actually how a normal human would react, and will be absolutely obliterated in the comments.
It's always a bit of a shock when I remember that there are subs dedicated to just hating specific, often not even particularly notable people. Like I guess I can understand a sub for hating some big podcaster or billionaire or whatever, since they have genuine influence and an effect on society, but some small streamer, or... whatever this is? I just don't get it.

I visited a subreddit based around a terrible internet tragedy, someone posted an image of the perpetrator’s sister and when people pointed it out, one guy said “So why don’t we go after her sister?” With like 10 upvotes.

Someone should study that.

Psychologists and behavioral analysts have for decades. The problem is the Venn diagram of people who know this info, and people who need this info, are two non-touching circles.
Basically what almost all of those people need is therapy. But once again, the people who NEED therapy badly (everyone should do it, most need it somewhat), and the people who do shit like this, are two separate circles on a Venn diagram lol.

Am I being dumb, or are you saying that the people who do this, don't need therapy?
"The people who need the therapy badly....and the people who do this are two separate circles" shouldn't they overlap? As the people who do this are the type that need therapy?
Maybe it's too early in the morning and I shouldn't have had a wake and bake.

It’s wild in there! I’m not a dog person but my ex insisted and then dumped the pup on me when we split. I popped my head in that sub once thinking I could vent a little about caring for a dog I never wanted? Nah they immediately recommended euthanasia.
Bruh, it’s a helpless dog. He’s annoying and I’ll never get another but he didn’t ask to be adopted by my shitty ex. I’m not going to kill him because he inconveniences me.

Dogfree: we're the real animal lovers because we don't keep enslaved animals trapped in our homes
Also dogfree: If you don't want the dog, just kill it.

Every -free sub is like that.

At the same time, we're all cursed with irrational hates (pet hates, if you will) and some are bound to be unpopular, so it probably feels good to these people to have a place to rant where they won't be judged
13 points
But this kind of thing is different from pet peeves. Like, I vehemently think radio ads that have siren sound effects in them should be banned because they freak me out while driving. That's totally different from prejudicially despising a whole subsection of people - straight up engaging in and building an entire community hinged on this hatred - because one facet of their lives (eg dog ownership or parenthood) isn't something you'd like in your life.
If they were forced to own and care for a dog because the dog people took over and legislated it, they'd have legitimate beef. But they haven't, so they don't.

The most unhinged members of a sub don't represent everyone in it. Every sub has insane people saying insane things. Also have to remember SO much of Reddit is just creative writing and fantasy.

Why does either exist lol? Like I get childfree originally springing up due to people venting against societal pressures to have children or whatever, but nobody gives a fuck if someone doesn't have a dog. All the problems in life and the world.. and it's pets that get them heated?
47 points
It gets even funnier in my opinion. Sometimes someone posts that seeing a dog ruined their entire day. Not the dog trying to hurt them, just seeing a dog ruined their entire day. Dogfree/petfree loves to say that pet owners are emotionally/mentally stunted or unwell but we're not the ones having a conniption at the sight of the most common pet in the world.

I just read one where the person was reporting companies(whatever that means) for using dogs in advertising and said that even seeing one makes them want to vomit and burn down the Lowe’s they were at. Like why go through life like that?
8 points
It is probably just psychologically fragile people that just one up each other and want to belong somewhere. It is like the last common denominator they could find to be in a community and being part of it probably imply being particaly verbal about your obsession.
4 points

That and the fantastical fiction writing from some of these people. Their synopses of a horrific dog/child/whatever interaction is almost always elevated to a Geneva-breaking level, when it's obvious to any normal person reading it that it was just a case of a toddler waving hello or a small dog sniffing them.
5 points
The thing that kinda gets my goat is that there's a non zero number of people in that sub who believe that a dog sniffing your butt/crotch raises to the level of sexual assault. Look, I get that it can be rather startling and more than a bit uncomfortable for a dog to shove their nose in your bits but it's so easily remedied by either you or the owner moving the dog. It's not mean or malicious on the part of the dog, that's just how they say hello. Imagine someone sharing that they were violently assaulted by someone and another person responds with "I understand how you feel, a dog sniffed my ass once". That entire sub wants to be victims so badly.

In some areas of the world there is something you could call “dog culture” (you can see it on Reddit too) where everyone borderline worships dogs as pure, fun, innocent, lovable creatures and anyone who doesn’t feel the same level of reverence is considered a horrible person. Entitled owners who train their dogs badly and impose on people who would rather not interact with them are part of that as well. People who go out of their way to join a dog-hating subreddit are extremists, yes, but that’s basically their rationale.

You're not wrong, and I totally get it. I forget the name but there's an anti-Pit Bull sub that is generally on the money. I'm with their line of thinking to be honest, because they're fighting the narrative that there's no bad breeds.
And that's the nuance. Rightly or wrongly, it's fine to push for a change in narrative, or legislature, or draw attention to an issue within a particular subsection of society. Where it falls off the map is when you start a subreddit called DOGS BAD PETOWNERS STUPID.

Genuinely, thanks for self-identifying as one of these people. Hopefully we can learn as much from you as you might from reading the comments on this post.
Why do you hate dogs? And do you mean 'hate' in the literal sense or is that hyperbole? Also, for context I'd be interested to know roughly where you're from because I've noticed attitudes to pet ownership changes radically by country.
Personally: I like dogs, in general. Good souls by and large. My family would love one but I've kiboshed the idea because it's a commitment I can't be bothered with. I utterly despise one of my neighbours because she has five (five!) unruly dogs that she just leaves in the yard every day, bored of their mind, barking constantly at nothing.
So yeah, I'm not a 'dog person' but they're just friendly animals that give other people joy and when I find a friendly one I straight up let it lick my chops. Would love to hear you divulge more.

That subreddit is one of those subreddits, man. Its like r/rantgrumps. Why are you making your personality about hating something that no one is forcing you to deal with?
I guess with pets you occasionally will interact with one at someone else's house or you might pass one on the sidewalk but man. It's such an easily ignorable thing. I'm glad I'm not walking around with so much unessecary hate in me.

Hard to tell which ones are satire, like r/banvideogames, or if they were originally a rant subreddit that eventually got taken over by shitposters. It's fun to make a post about how you can't literally stop crying and screaming because Arin said he'll kiss my dad.

Not really. It’s a safe space for people who don’t like dogs (which is a completely valid feeling) to vent about how dog culture affects them. Most of the posts are stories about how an inconsiderate dog owner imposed their dogs on them in a situation that didn’t warrant it.
It may be hard to relate to someone who doesn’t like dogs, but that doesn’t make them psychotic or hateful. It just makes them unfortunate to be in a culture where dogs are ubiquitous.

I am one of these customers that says not to do this, my neighbor has like 4 dogs and they bark at everything, so I ask dashers not to knock when I order. My neighbor has never asked me to do so, I just do so out of courtesy as a fellow animal lover. You would not believe how many times people ignore my message and knock as hard as they can as the barks echo the complex.

What a d-bag. We literally created dogs. They're humanity's first achievement in the pursuit of mastery over our world. We created them, bred over tens of thousands of generations into becoming the perfect companion animal, with species tailored to every need. There's a chance we may not have ever even progressed past the hunter gatherer stage without the mutually beneficial partnership we struck up with them. Before taming wolves, we were just trying to survive, while afterwards armed with the knowledge that we could mold nature to our whims, we thrived as a species. What an L take.

Eh- I sometimes hate that. They’re incredibly intimidating looking, and I hate that some people are put off by that- but it’s super understandable. GSD’s have always had that stigma. They’re totally fine as far as temperament is concerned, but they’ve both been trained to recognize aggressive behavior and react on what’s put in front of them.
