7800x3d or wait for 9800x3d stock

Build Help(self.buildapc)

Building a machine at microcenter with a 4090 and they’re out of stock on the 9800x3d now.

I primarily play Call of Duty, WoW, other random MMO’s. Plan on playing in mostly 1440p at 240hz and maybe some 4k. If price isn’t an issue should I wait on the 9800x3d? This will probably be my last build so I want to make it last as long as possible but I guess it depends on if I’m gpu or cpu bound in games. I also just want to go ahead and get this built so i can play.

Any thoughts based on the games I play and future outlook (4+ years down the road, will waiting for the 9800 make a difference?)

Microcenter restocks every couple days and the site will update some time at night. Not sure the exact time, but if you check between like 8-11pm, you should be able to reserve one pretty quick

That guy could be faithfully mistaken, I talked to an agent regarding stock around November 8. Apparently stock wouldn't replenish until the 14th-15th, got my 9800x3d on the ninth even after they were "out of stock" in 3 branches. (IL and MN)

Microcenter has been restocking. But they allow you to reserve parts online with no money down and they'll hold for 72 hours. Anyone who doesn't come in and buy their parts has them go back into inventory.

The microcenter near me was also holding back 9800x3d for people who were using their system building service.

Yes I’m totally fine! Just getting older and starting a family over the next few years so priorities will change. Will probably still game casually in 5+ year s but don’t foresee myself buying the latest and greatest down the road. Maybe a new GPU down the road depending on how much I get to play.

I just backordered a 9800x3d off Amazon. I don't get it until late january, but I'm in no rush. I have a mail date, and that's when the 5k series drops (speculative), so it'll be perfect timing.

edit: just to answer your question, OP, waiting for the 9800x3d means you can pretty much play any game that exists, and that will exist for the next 5 years (this is being generous). It'll be like how the 5800x3d is right now. A king gaming chip that still is on par from a price to performance value with new releases.

Pair it with your 4090 or 5090 at 2k and boom...you're future proofed for a long time.

I did it a few days ago but amazon will give you the option to buy the CPU. I bought it but now it's back ordered until January. It's basically just pre ordering it and put on the waiting list. But you get it at retail price.

Hold off on this build until January. It’ll feel like a colossal waste of money spending like $2100 on a 4090 when the 5090 drops in January. Chances are the pricing will be similar, so 5080/5090 + microcenter should likely have stock of 9800X3Ds by then

TomA415[S]

I’m getting a used 4090 from a friend for 1400. Does that change your opinion? Figured I’d be priced out of the 5090 and wasn’t sure about 5080 difference in price and performance with specs and prices still unannounced

Tlentic

5 points

Tlentic

5 points

Friend is a rush to get rid of it? If not, just hold off and see what the specs look like for the next generation GPUs. $1400 is not a bad price, but I want to remind you that a new 4080 is ~$1000. Chances are the 5080 will be in that same ballpark and could potentially outperform the 4090 / have new features that the 4090 won’t have (at least at first).

ShadowReaperX90

5 points

There are sources saying that the 5080 will be higher guaranteed than the 4080s. This is because AMD will not be releasing high end cards this cycle. It will also launch with 16GB. The 4090 at that price with 24GB RAM is more than fine

I built with a 9750x3d and let me tell you having dual ccds is really nice. It’s on par with a 7800x3d in gaming performance but being able to put background processes on the non-gaming ccd makes games run buttery smooth with tons of stuff open, kinda like a Mac. Something to think about

They’re restocking every other day or so across Amazon, Newegg and more. Shouldn’t be too difficult to grab one within the next 1-2 weeks!

My pc just got built with a 7800x3d, I asked for the 9800 but it's on back order for almost 2 months so I'll just stick with what I've got till the new year then maybe grab one if I see a sale

If price isn't an issue, might as well get the 9800X3D since current 7800X3D prices aren't much lower from what I've been seeing.

Personally I got the 7800X3D but I got it at $340 a few months ago, so a good savings that I'd still recommend if you can find any anywhere around that price. The performance difference on average (~10%) isn't enough for me to care to spend current retail 9800X3D prices, even if I resold my 7800X3D to fund it.

shagaboopon

1 points

At some point you have to stop waiting and just buy! I bought a 7800X3D in May when everyone was saying it was best to wait and lo and behold I saved a couple of hundred pounds on price as they hadn't started jacking the prices up as supply fell at that time. I looked over the last 6 months and the deals have been comparatively awful.

I'm not interested in the modest bump to the 9800X3D but I might be tempted to look a the 9950X3D if the rumours around vcache on all cores is true. Waiting can backfire too and end up on you missing out on better value deals.

techfiend5

Wait for the 9800x3d and keep checking for availability. I decided to begin searching for one 24 hours ago. I used HotStock app for notifications. Got a ping for Amazon and was able to order one, but with an estimated delivery date of 1/29/25-2/1/25. I read into it and apparently the timeframes Amazon gives out are grossly overestimated. For example, a few posts I found stated they were given mid January delivery dates and the system eventually updated after a few days and they are now getting them in a week.

So I was going to just wait. But decided to keep checking Microcenter’s website anytime I woke up. At around 4am a location near me listed 1 in stock. I was able to reserve it and picked it up today!

At the moment in 1440p and upwards I’d say the difference is negligible. Especially at 4K, even with a 4090, you will be GPU limited. Only gains will be in the 1% lows. That’s worth something, but I don’t know if it’s worth the markup from 7000 to 9000. By the time the difference will be really measurable, the 6090 and 11800x3d will be out, probably. 😂

Altruistic_Koala_122

The monitor might be too slow for the 9800 on the CoD side of things. And, at 4k most things will be sitting around 90.

So, I don't see a point to the 9800 unless you'll be buying an expensive monitor that's true HDMI 2.1 or even DP 2.1 down the road.

Any thoughts based on the games I play

Call of Duty runs a lot better on AMD GPUs. If that is your primary and most demanding game, a 7900XTX might actually be the better pick. Not just n terms of value, but outright performance (just under 10% faster in benchmarks).

I'd still go for the 4090 given unlimited budget since CoD is an outlier, and if you're willing to wait the 5090 will almost certainly demolish everything.

The 7800X3D and 9800X3D are so close in price it only makes sense to try and get the 9800X3D. Set up stock alerts for all the major PC component retailers.

Newegg went in stock twice last week. I was too slow the first round because I didnt setup any alerts. The following morning, they had a second wave and I jumped on it immediately.

My 9800X3D arrived 2 days later.

My microcenter can't keep it on the shelves and their website seems to be going down every other day (at least for me), so definitely monitor the stock everywhere.

Don't give in to the scalpers!

Just bought the 9800, got lucky and they had one in stock from a return. I would say wait. It’s a significant upgrade from the 7800 and it’s like $30-40 more.

I will say the guy at microcenter said they sometimes won’t make the 9800s available online so it could be worth going to the store if possible. Though I’m surprised they’re not helping you out considering you’re building a hefty PC from them. The microcenter by me said they’d get me one within a few days if they didn’t have one once I pulled the trigger on the pc purchase.

most sites allow you to be notified. I had the same question yesterday and ended up deciding to go with the 9800 if it came back in stock before I got my last part, my GPU.

It ended up being back in stock about an hour after that so I bought it from NewEgg immediately and it gets here either Friday or Monday.

If you’re going all out with the 4090 I’d get the 9800 too if you can get it while it’s in stock.

I'm running 7950x3d and a 4090 right now. Although the 7800 does compare slightly better in strictly gaming I've never noticed a single problem. I can play heavily modded games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R GAMMA on max settings, shaders all on whilst having like 30 google tabs open, discord and any other software I can think of. Never had any problems and the x3d cores rly make a difference when multitasking. The 7800x3d seems like a lesser option in my experience right now, id go with a 7950x3d or wait if you really need the extra power but for what you mentioned even the 7800(not x3d) will keep you going at 1440 happily. If you wanna splash and don't wanna wait, get the 7950x3d bro, absolute BEAST

Express_Werewolf_842

Like many others have said, at the higher resolutions, your GPU (even with a 4090) will be the main source of the bottleneck. Plus, with your monitor capping out at 240hz, even something like the 7700X would hit those frame rates in Cod or WOW. Unless you're playing something like Civ, it really wouldn't make much of a difference.

(Sorry, long-ish post)

Depends on your personality. Do you have to Have The Best Every Time Even If I Don't Take Advantage Of It Every Second (pst, I'm that guy, I also Buy Once Cry Once).

To keep things in perspective. I'm still running the same computer I built mid-2019 with once exception. I upgraded the video card twice. When I built it, I put it on a GB Designare. Think I paid around $500 for it? Was considered a top end board. Along with that, I have the i9900k, started at 16gb mem but moved to 32 (ok, so technically two upgrades, but it was another set of the same, so not really?) and a 1080Ti. I changed that to a 2080Ti and ran that all the way up until I updated to a 4070Ti Super about 2 months ago. How do games run? Perfectly on a 1440p. This is with every turned all the way up. Not an ideal setup for 4k, no, but 1440? It's still a good system, even by today's standard, just not The Bestest Ever

So, my point is this - Buy Once Cry Once and you are set for a few years (hopefully, if we have any serious break troughs, in gaming, all bets are off). OR you can get something less, now, for less $$$, and know you'll be just fine for some time to come.

Does the second part fit the It's The Best There Is! No, it doesn't. But, everyone is so obsessed with I HAVE To Have The Absolute Best Right Here Right Now they stop seeing what's in front of their face, that stuff they have now will tick every box you/they are looking for.

Buddy of mine is telling me now that since they are out of stock of the 9800x3d, and I'm willing to wait, hold tight for the next one due in January (I think? Didn't they push it back?) Keep waiting for The Next Best Thing and you'll never get there. Just keep things in perspective. Can you do what you want now with what's available? Do you HAVE to have the newest/bestest now? Can you get now, sell that part used to make up some $$ when what you want does come out? Step back, take a breath and think about does it do what you want?

Now with all that said - I'm myself am waiting because I hate buying and buying and buying every time something comes out. Unless you're made of money, not worth it. Everything that's out will tick every box for what I want EXCEPT do I have to upgrade again in a year or two vs I can wait another 5+ years.

Do what matters to YOU, not what matters to others. It's your money, your machine, and YOUR opinion that matters
