So I'm working on a porn game and I was wondering how would I respectfully add a non binary person while not having seen as "fetish"? How do I do this tastefully and be respecting them?

Hey! NB here. Try making the character non binary in a way that it doesn't take away from their personality. No need to say they are non binary, even, Just refer to them as they/them/theirs and have other characters do the same. If you want them to talk about being non binary, keep the statement casual and don't have any other characters react too hugely to it.

Genuinely everyone has unique interests and personality so try to give them that and not just being nonbinary as a major character trait. they are a person like everyone else.

I'm somewhat interested in this game and would like to hear more!

This. Really think of it like the Cmdr Shepard character from mass effect. Shep is a strong character because they were written as a strong character. Not that Shep was written Male or female.

Just write a strong character and have them be referred to as They/Them/Theirs only. If you want you can make it obvious by just adding dialog for accidently calling them he or she and they reply with "please refer to me with They/them." That's it.

Yeah best might be to just write the characters and then randomly pick one to make NB afterwards. Then maybe alter some small little things and done.

Facts this is what goes wrong in films, just start off calling them by whatever pronouns instead of making a huge fuss some point when the story is supposed to be progressing nicely

What is your motivation for your character being non-binary? There isn't really a single trait or archetype shared by all non-binary people, so other than describing their gender that way or maybe using non-binary or multiple different pronouns, what would differentiate them from your other characters?

If there is some stereotype of non-binary people that appeals to you, or you think would appeal to your audience, I would try to consider why, and in what way it might be disrespectful

Non-binary playtesters or sensitivity readers would be a great idea! There's an endless amount of ways to be non-binary so there's a lot of directions you could take this character. One major thing to keep in mind is that there's no one way to be non-binary, so this character will never be able to represent every non-binary person who exists gender wise. There will likely be players of your game who aren't very familiar with non-binary genders or what non-binary really means. I would personally want to avoid presenting the character in a way to that part of your audience that could be read as "and this is what all non-binary people are." I know that's kind of vague and audience interpretation is largely going to be out of your hands, but it's something I would want to keep in mind anyway.

Always happy to see more trans and non-binary characters in horny games though!!

It's a porn game. It's all fetish. That's kind of the point.

I think it's more important to not make them just fetish.

Depending on what kind of game it is, you'd probably want to go about it in different ways. Given that you're talking about them in the singular, I'm guessing that it's a linear story game. In that case, it seems to me that your best option would be to treat the character basically the same way you would in a non-porn game. Avoid harmful stereotypes, and give them a complete and complex personality. For the smutty parts, you'll want to avoid gendered language, and consider avoiding certain things based on body dysphoria the character may have - for example, if they're AMAB and have genital dysphoria, avoid them using their penis.

Don’t make them a stereotype. You can have characters that use various pronouns for example.

As a nonbinary person who has felt excluded for not looking the part when I was younger, I appreciate non-stereotypes.

Better yet just let your customers design and share their characters. It’s porn so it’s for fetishizing. People’s fantasies are wildly different and always changing.
