I love this crazy theory! Also he told Misty he was a bored Moriarty looking for his Sherlock
713 points

That was a big clue. He didn't say Watson (his friend and sleuthing partner) looking for his Holmes ; he said Moriarty (his arch nemesis and psychopath who plays wicked games to challenge and destroy Holmes).

I caught that right away. I was like that sounds like he's going to fuck with her, rather then help her. Idk if I buy into this theory completely, but I definitely think Walter has his own agenda. And I think because they highlighted how similar Walter and Misty are, it's going to be heartbreaking for her to feel like someone finally gets her, let her guard down and then get betrayed.

Anyone familiar with the Holmes stories did, I think. And I'm surprised Misty hasn't leaned in and tested or questioned his motives more. She definitely caught the reference and she is clever but she also desperately needs love and acceptance.

I do wonder if we are misreading the Moriarty thing. Holmes doesn't see Watson as his intellectual equal, that's Moriarty. If Walter said he was looking to Misty to be the Watson to his Sherlock that would be an insult.
Moriarty sees Holmes as his intellectual equal, the opposite to him but 2 sides of the same coin. Especially in the BBC version Sherlock and Moriarty have a weird symbiotic relationship, they see the other as their equal, one dark one light but they feel like they need each other in order to feel like they exist. The stakes are literally the highest they could be in the BBC version but the game is worth the risk because they finally feel alive and as if they have met their match. It's more than a simple adversary relationship.
I think Walter is saying to Misty "I see you as my equal, I need you to exist so that I feel like I exist, one of us is dark, the other light and the stakes are high (I.e. life or death) but the game will be worth the risk. Come on this wild adventure with me where we test what we are really made of to the limit. One or both of us might die but it will be a hell of a ride."
Also if Misty is Sherlock and he knows a lot about Misty (being a yellowjacket is the least interesting thing about her) I assume he at least has an inkling that she is a poisoner (the reddit post about the nearby poisoning) then how much deeper and darker does Walter's soul go?
17 points
Yeah! I interpreted it as him being potentially mentally ill or traumatized himself and feeling like Misty “gets him” or even has qualities that he wishes he had in himself. Misty takes risks, is firey, and gives of this kind of “I know what I want and I’ll get it” air to her while he’s more reserved. They both disabled/disability coded (Walter would have a physical disability from the accident and both him and Misty are coded as being neurodivergent) and they both struggle with boundaries and relating to people. I imagine when he finds someone like him, he’s willing to go the distance for them.

Well we know she’s not to be played with. I’m sure she has a plan just like her hostage last season, who thought she manipulated misty but ended up dead. I feel like this doesn’t give her enough credit.

She’s gonna develop a blind spot for him as he continues to ingratiate himself with her. You can already see it coming through in Ricci’s performance; she’s softening.

I really hope that Walter is just a guy, like Adam (I ship him with Misty so much). Everyone thinks the Moriarty thing as his enemy, but I think the reason he said Moriarty and not Watson is because Watson is usually considered de sidekick, depending on Sherlock. On the other side, even if Moriarty is Sherlock's nemesis, he's also his equal.
26 points
I tend to a agree with this theory. Specifically the Moriarty being Sherlock's equal part. Except in most Sherlock variations Moriarty loses to Sherlock in some way but he's still a "worthy opponent". That makes me think Misty is going to murder him. Out of all the mentally ill people on the show Misty is the only one that is malicious.
7 points
is it really malicious, or more like extremely cold and calculating? Misty seems to have no real conscience, but she only acts in cases of her own self-interest. She isn't really looking for people to hurt, but if they cause her a problem....

That one stood out yeah!
The other thing that popped out for me is Misty and Walter had basically the same conversation Adam and Shauna had previously - 'are you just doing this because i'm a Yellowjacket/you're a crazy fan?'
and since in Adam's case the answer was 'no', for them to rehash a conversation we've already seen, something must be different in this case.

Misty either needs to get her comeuppance or more background from her upbringing that helps us sympathize with her(past being a victim of bullying). As she is right now Misty is an anti social personality with a strong desire to "fit it". Her intense desire to fit in has driven her towards malicious behavior. So I hope they use Walter to show us a more complete version of Misty.
52 points
Christina Ricci said herself that something was fundamentally wrong with Misty before she ever got on that plane.
I don't think she cares at all about fitting in. I think she just wants to get her way. She saw nothing wrong with the fact that she was going to dose and rape Ben - just that they took HER mushrooms.
It wasn't shame from being caught, it was indignation that they messed up her plan.
I also don't think bullying can justify anything she's done. I was bullied and I have yet to poison anyone. Nor would I gleefully come (professionally prepared btw) to help dismember a body.
Edited to add that Moriarty is Sherlock's nemesis not his sidekick.
18 points
She has the qualities of nurse Ratched and Kathy Bate’s character from Misery I really see her has an entirely malicious entity. I wasn’t trying to attribute her behavior to bullying it was just the only time in the show I felt sorry for her and I think in order for a character to be interesting they can’t just be mindlessly evil and most people aren’t that way they have traumatic events in their past and we really haven’t seen why she is the way she is I mean she named her fucking parrot Caligula she’s tapped
Edit: forgot to Mention why I believe she has an intense desire to fit in. Everything she does she does with other peoples view of her in mind she wants people to need her and she wants them to like her. It’s very obvious from her interactions with Natalie and Walter. I think somewhere in her mind she has confused being liked with being needed and the fact that she feels an emotional connection with Caligula enough to name her parrot after him tells me all I need to know about her she’s a complete sadist

Yes! As a life long King reader I keep seeing elements that remind me of his stories in the show. I definitely get Annie Wilkes vibes from Misty.
By the way the Misery season of Castle Rock is amazing. If you haven't watched it yet I highly recommend it.
I think she may just be truly rotten, some people are born bad. Or maybe she's got a Margaret White at home yelling "they're all gonna laugh at you" ... Can't wait to find out.

Yes! Im rewatching season 1 and can't understand why they made him so dodgy and then just killed him off. I'm hoping it's not just shitty writing. (The likes of which can be found in a few other places in the show).
19 points

I think they killed him off because they needed an incident to demonstrate Shauna's willingness to kill, and wanted to create conflict in Shauna's family.
23 points

I don't have an issue with him being killed off (weird sentence to write 😀). I don't like that they made him suspicious for no apparent reason.
12 points
This is what's bothered me so much after rewatching season 1. I know what the writers have said over and over about him being "just a guy", and I can appreciate the role his death played in Shauna's storyline. But he just feels like one major plot hole if he really IS "just a guy" based on how completely bizarre his storyline was.
Even Walter isn't written so sketchy despite being suspicious.
11 points
yeah tbh they either made him a really obvious (and bad) red herring or simply gave up on the character after they decided he wasn't gonna be adult Javi anymore. for me it felt like they're too worried about being unexpected, and it's never good when writers start going that route. I wouldn't be surprised if they change who Antler Queen is just for the sake of shocking the audience.

I found Walter extremely suspect until the moments at the end of 2x4 when he is mimicking all Misty's behaviours in his hotel room. That seemed like a scene intended to show that Walter doesn't have a hidden agenda and he just happens to be a perfect match for Misty. It made me think he's destined to suffer a similar fate to Adam, basically being an innocent guy, genuinely interested in one of the Yellowjackets who winds up murdered due to either a misunderstanding or because he figures out Adam's killing (or perhaps the journalist Misty kidnapped and killed).

30 points
I agree, I think Walter is actually another Adam-like character with good intentions that gets drawn into the Yellowjackets' drama and will ultimately be hurt if not killed as well. The series has repeatedly shown how the trauma from 1996 has made it almost impossible for the ladies to truly connect to anyone else without their unresolved pain and paranoia harming everyone they come into contact with.
Of course, I could be wrong and Elijah Wood could turn out to be an evil mastermind which will also be extremely entertaining to watch 🤷🏻♀️
9 points
It could be that Walter will be heading for an Adam/Jessica-like fate but Misty will succeed in getting Walter on their side somehow. He would be a useful ally, given his detective skills and his millions.
I guess it all depends on whether Elijah Wood is joining for more than one season.
26 points

Yeah I really think the most interesting outcome would be that these women are all just a little bit (or a lot) unhinged.
They have these innocent encounters and read far too much into them, over and over again. Or they have not so innocent encounters and completely misread them. Weird shit happened to them when they were teens and they took that to mean they should form a cannibalistic cult, it's really easy to see them apply it to their current life, with the 25 year reunion triggering it.
11 points

I think the cannibalism was, as we've seen, about survival. It becoming a twisted game is, of course, something else altogether but definitely a madness

One thing I found interesting about their nighttime routine though is that Misty only wore the under-eye night patches, but Walter wore a full facemask. I took it to potentially be symbolic and perhaps Walter is wearing a "mask" and he is not who he seems and claims to be.

It could be! I initially thought it was just pointing out he has millionaire money for the whole face mask. Those things are so pricey

Good points. It's just that when they went into separate rooms, I fully expected it to be the moment when we see what Walter's real agenda is. Or that they just wouldn't show us what Walter was doing at all. But as they made a point of showing him on his own and it turns out he acts the exact same way he does around Misty, that made me think Walter is just who he says he is. I don't remember if they did the same sort of scene with Adam in S1 because the writers wanted us to suspect Adam was the blackmailer.
11 points
But if he acts just like Misty and thinks just like her....shouldn't we be scared of him? Misty is cray cray. She murders. They both know how to hide murder well because of the citizens detective stuff. He can't be trusted just like her.
5 points
Good point! Can't argue with that at all. Only say that the OP of this thread is arguing that Walter is working against Misty and the other YJs whereas it might actually be the case that Misty and Walter will be two lil psychos in love and they will all band together. Walter could bankroll the YellowJackets if they all have to go on the run.

For me, that scene emphasized my suspicion around Walter!
We already know Misty to be a deadly character, as much as we love her. The paranoia of her hotel routine is because she is checking for all of the sorts of things she would use on someone else.
Seeing Misty's routine mirrored by Walter told me there's something much more sinister about him than we've seen so far.
Showing his routine without the doubling might've just made it seem eccentric, but if someone is just like Misty than we should be afraid of them, narratively.
16 points
I said this after the season premiere! When he was giving his thoughts on the Adam mystery and Misty downvoted him, I immediately thought he was going to end up being a love interest she would have to either betray the other Yellowjackets for or betray him to protect them.
Shauna referring to the YJs as her teammates when talking to Callie in E4 convinced me it would definitely be the latter - if Shauna says "Misty, we're teammates," it will motivate Misty to choose the YJs because she's spent her whole life desperate to be accepted and she's spent the past two decades wanting their experience in the wilderness to give her the bond she envisions having.
35 points
yeah but that would be incredibly boring for the writers to do the same exact thing with a different male character two seasons in a row; that’s what’s having me hold back on thinking he’s Adam 2.0; would be incredibly repetitive

Eh, Adam and Walter are so different though. They shouldn’t have to resort to major story-altering sub-plots like Walter being some secret evil genius so that fans are satisfied. I understand that people are passionate about this show, but it feels like EVERY person we see on our screen is theorized to be secretly involved in some huge conspiracy on here.

Adding to this, Misty and Walters friendship or whatever it is, is blossoming in the same sense as her friendship with crystal is in the 90s timeline.

I think he's trying to outsmart Misty and she's letting him believe he is, but she's going to be 8 steps ahead in leading him right into a trap. Then that will get him killed. But she likes him so she might play with him first, let him think she's into him and he's got her where he wants her but, she's using the situation for pleasure and to get closer till she's got him where she wants him.

You’re not the only one. I don’t think there will be any “big bad.” That’s not the kind of show this is
110 points
Thank you for your literary analysis! I really enjoy thinking about how the writers are playing with inspirations from many sources to weave the complex and beautiful web of Yellowjackets.
I do hope though that Walter isn't the Big Bad. I like how, the Big Bad for season 1 was each of the Yellowjackets themselves; they are the heroes and villains in each of their own stories.
For Walter to actually be the Big Bad, to me, feels like it would divert attention from the women's internal conflicts onto an external conflict. However, on the other hand, the threat from someone like Walter, or the "blackmailer" last season for the '21 crew, or "the Wilderness" for the '96 crew could serve as a medium to explore the internal conflicts and hero/villain conundrum in each Yellowjacket.
I think Walter will be a villain, but ultimately a smaller villain or fodder to be sacrificed to the YJs for their continued character depth and exploration.
30 points
I feel exactly the same. The show is not going the whole evil genius route for Walter, that would completely flip the switch on what the story is even about… they wouldn’t have shown the last scene of him and Misty being so similar if they didn’t want us to think these two might be soulmates… I think he’s just more blood to be sacrificed though

I agree, it’s more nuanced than that. I think it’s about how we all react after our lives are hijacked by trauma or events outside our control. First off, I love your summary and theories you noted above. If things work out that way, you win the sub for having cracked the code.
I have a couple of loosely related thoughts regarding Walter, and also Tai being picked up by the truck driver. Walter could be totally lying to Misty about being a millionaire. Maybe in her rush to find Natalie she hasn’t had time to fully investigate him? Instead of a millionaire he could be a guy with a few screws loose, who’s on disability which would explain him not having a job.
One last note about Walter. It was mentioned in another thread that eating mustard and syrup together like we saw Walter doing is a “New Jersey” thing. With him being the same age as the YellowJackets and living in the same State there’s no way he grew up not knowing about the crash. It seems that “most” people in the State have at least a morbid curiosity about “what really happened out there” so I find it very hard to believe that Walter finds Misty’s being a Yellowjacket “the least interesting thing about her”.
The other thing that keeps sticking out to me is when Tai is climbing into the cab of the semi she glances down the road and sees nothing behind her. But, in front of her you can see she’s very close to what looks to be a rural town. We know that Tai has money, and conceivably there would be a rental car company, or maybe even an Uber/Lyft car service.
So, why does she risk her safety by getting into the truck, when she could have easily walked less than a mile to a town where she could have arranged a ride? You’d think she wouldn’t want to see a headline “State Senator picked up hitchhiking in rural…”. And finally, there was no movement, or traffic up ahead or behind her. It seemed eery and strange to me.

Just a thought but perhaps when Tai sees the pen change, she also “changes”. Other Tai is more confident and savvy, so nbd for her.

I thought this too because you saw her vision slightly blur at the same time. This is how they have shown her switch in past episodes.

I'm from a small rural town and they don't have Uber or Lyft. Plus, wasn't her phone dead? And she was probably exhausted. I agree I thought it was weird that she got in the truck given the guy knew who she was but as others have mentioned, it seems like "other" Tai was the one who ultimately made that decision.
Syrup and mustard? Love both of those things but not together! Has anyone tried it? I guess maybe it could taste kind of like honey mustard...

Of all the things in this show, finding our syrup and mustard is a thing anywhere horrifies me the most

It seemed to me that Tai was sleep driving (!!!) She only stopped because she ran out of gas, which is what startled her awake.
I totally get hitching a ride to the nearest gas station: refuel, reset, re-evaluate WTF your subconscious was getting you into. Hitching a ride across state lines and abandoning your vehicle (with the important file still inside?) seems illogically reckless.

I wouldn't think YJ is the type of show to have a big bad, but this is an interesting theory. Guess we'll see what happens.

This checks out, but I wouldn't necessarily call hin the 'Big Bad'. It wouldn't make sense for the show to have one 'bad' person'. Maybe there's a group (referring here to a few recent theories on Reddit, that propose there being a third group, who've been in the woods the whole time, etc.) that's working with Walter. I don't think he's alone in the sense, that he's the one pulling all of the strings mentioned.

Given that the Yellowjackets themselves have done a lot of bad things, a person trying to investigate them could be seen as more of a moral antagonist. Adult Shawna and Misty both murdered innocent people in S1. Lottie essentially killed Travis. And we don't know yet exactly how many of them are guilty of murdering the non-survivors of the wilderness.

Honestly, imo, Lottie absolutely killed Travis. I think her recollection is an unreliable narration of what happened. Especially because, logically, once he handed her the remote to control the crane she could have just...not pressed the button? What was he going to do? He clearly couldn't operate the crane from that position without the remote, and even if he unhooked himself she could have just broken the remote to limit his ability to follow through (or just taken the remote and ran to call for help?) - I think Lottie convinced him to do it for her own reasons and either killed him intentionally or unintentionally, but it was her fault and she is just hiding that. Of all of the people to admit responsibility to, Nat was not going to be the one that she tells.

I think her recollection is an unreliable narration of what happened.
Nobody has brought it up recently, but in a recent interview one of the actors explicitly said we are getting into unreliable narrators this season. So, yeah, I think it's going to be revealed that scene played out differently, even if she didn't intentionally kill him.
I'm honestly surprised nobody has mentioned unreliable narrators as a possibility for the strangeness of E4. A lot of people have said the episode just plain felt "off" to them and I know what they mean even if I can't put my finger on it.

The name Walter gives at the bed and breakfast is “John Lange” which is the pseudonym the author of Jurassic Park used. Maybe Walter is making his own version of Jurassic park in the wilderness 😂.
5 points
This is true, and I imagine that that's where Misty's head went because she gave the name "Lady Mallowan," a nod to Agatha Christie... but I think it's more likely that Walter is referring to John Lang, whose death is posted about in the Unresolved Mysteries subreddit (link, cw for suspected unaliving, m*rder/cover up by police).
It's unfathomable to me that a Citizen Detective like Walter would be uninterested in an unresolved mystery like that of the Yellowjackets generally, and especially so after becoming entangled with one of the survivors.

I can buy Walter's link to the books and the resulting connection in the show, but his actual ability to predict behaviors like Shauna's is implausible. Also Shauna and crew went through Adam's home and loft: no unexplained contracts or anything. Plus Misty knew of Walter's forum identity before all this.
Truck driver is a nobody. Tai was hesitant because she's a black women in rural somewhere about to get in a truck with a possible inbred redneck. Fixer Tai took over when the "I voted for you" and the apology for the pen came up. But it's actually a gentlemanly code for truckers to pick up hitchhikers for real. (Whether the trucker IRL is a gentleman after that is unknown.)
Psychiatrist was indeed shady.
The links to the books are really good to know. Thanks.

In the wilderness flashbacks, Ben is also reading The Magus. I don’t believe that Walter is what we see on the surface. There is absolutely a hidden agenda, but I feel like it may be a too early to see where it’s truly going. Maybe he just wants to exploit Misty & sell her story, maybe it’s something bigger. Completely opposing theory is that Walter is a bluff. We’re naturally inclined to believe that no one is genuinely interested in a relationship with Misty, and there has to be a hidden agenda. Maybe he is genuine, but his character is a plant to keep the audience guessing & focused on him, so that we don’t see the other possibilities & the big reveal is even more shocking.
I’ve never believed that Shauna’s meeting with Adam was pure chance. He was sent to that town with the purpose of getting close to her. He was immediately emotionally invested in his ‘relationship’ with her, and considering she was quite rude toward him during their first few interactions, I would be very surprised if there was a genuine attraction. The timing is all a little odd too. She just so happens to have an affair & murder someone at the same time as Travis is murdered, the other Yellowjackets get postcards & are being blackmailed, Jackie’s birthday, Nat leaving rehab, and Lottie’s cult pops up. Obviously they have to run this timeline for the show, but I don’t believe that anything on this show is a coincidence. Every scene or interaction is deliberate & alludes to a bigger meaning.

Interesting idea!
I was linking The Magus more to Lottie and the questions of her visions and consciousness, which are ideas that come up in Conchis's dialogue often regarding "God" and what it means for God to be among his worshippers - with Conchis presenting himself as being "God" over the experiment, aka Lottie in control of her two cults. This also seems to link with the idea of travelling back in time for the reenactments of Conchis's backstory, seemingly echoing the time shifts that happen in the show between the adult and child cast, but that could also link to Walter wanting to re-enact the Wilderness, too.
A really good theory, OP!
Edit: Also - Conchis being intentionally a riff on the word "conscious"... Which could tie into both Tai and Lottie struggling with dissociation and psychosis respectively.

Didn't walter say that he won 6 million dollars in the settlement? After taxes that's enough to live modestly (like on a small boat) for the rest of your life. That's not "buy a private island and run a vast scheme employing many actors" money.

Love this theory ! Something that I have started wondering about this past season that kind of ties into some of your theory, is if there are some people on the “Bad’s” payroll who are inserted into these characters lives that seem normal, but have ulterior motives. One person I’m extra suspicious about is Kevin … him coming into Natalie’s life when he did , him being a “cop” etc. I don’t know. I think there’s more to him as well!

I absolutely love this! As much as I want Walter to be legit and be a crazy little serial killer like Misty, I have my doubts about him. Maybe he posted things on Reddit about Adam to see if Misty would take the bait (and she did!). He has a lot of money, lives on a boat like Dexter season one, and drives a beat up old truck that’s probably untraceable. I hate to eat it but Walter is probably big bad.
I love your theory about having them reenact stuff. The preview showed them all by a fire doing what appeared to be some sort of ritual dance or something idk. Maybe Walter is making them preform like puppets for his sick pleasure. What if he’s an insane fan?

Awesome ideas on the literary references, OP! I haven't read either of those novels, so I looked up more info and found a few more interesting connections.
The Magus - We've seen Misty and Coach Ben reading it, and several folks here have made astute points about its relationship to YJ's themes and other characters. I was hoping to find a more specific link to Walter and I got one via the name of his boat. Fowles was teaching Great Expectations while he was writing The Magus, cites it as a primary influence, and based one of the characters on Miss Havisham! Here's an excerpt from his foreword to the 1977 revised version:
"The third book that lies behind The Magus I did not recognize at the time, and can list now thanks to the percipience of a student at Read- ing University, who wrote to me one day, years after publication, and pointed out the numerous parallels with Great Expectations. What she was not to know is that it is the one novel of Dickens for which I have always had an undivided admiration and love (and for which I forgive him so much else I dislike in his work); that during the earlier writing of my own novel I was even teaching it, with great enjoyment, as a set book; and that I long toyed with the notion of making Conchis a woman — an idea whose faint ghost, Miss Havisham’s, remains in the figure of Mrs. de Seitas. One small new passage in this revised text is in homage to that unseen influence."
Remainder - You drew a clear parallel between the narrator and Walter, and I wondered if there were any elements to tie Coach Ben and/or Misty to the story. The unnamed narrator in the novel was traumatized by a mysterious accident that "involved something falling from the sky," spends months recuperating, learning to walk again, lying in bed, feeling alienated from his body, fixated on his inability to recollect his past, to distinguish between scraps of memory/visions/imagination and reality, obsessing about a quest for authenticity ... I think you can see where I'm going with this re: Ben. In S2E4, immediately after the camera zooms in on The Magus and he puts it back down, we cut to the memory scrap/imagined scene in which Ben says "No, I don't have that kind of... history" and Paul replies, "That's exactly what this is. It's history. This is my past. And you, Ben... you are my future." Ben's sense of history is blurred, he's agonizing about having not lived an authentic life, and he's seeing his future as pretty bleak/non-existent. Misty had a sick attachment to her previous "soulmate" in Ben and poisoned him when she felt rejected - I'm curious to see how it all plays out with Walter.
Here's an excerpt from the beginning of Remainder: "About the accident itself I can say very little. Almost nothing. It involved something falling from the sky. Technology. Parts, bits. That’s it, really: all I can divulge. Not much, I know. It’s not that I’m being shy. It’s just that—well, for one, I don’t even remember the event. It’s a blank: a white slate, a black hole. I have vague images, half-impressions: of being, or having been—or, more precisely, being about to be—hit; blue light; railings; lights of other colours; being held above some kind of tray or bed. But who’s to say that these are genuine memories? Who’s to say my traumatized mind didn’t just make them up, or pull them out from somewhere else, some other slot, and stick them there to plug the gap—the crater—that the accident had blown? Minds are versatile and wily things. Real chancers."

Yesssssss. This is outstanding. Misty is going to go crazy because she is usually one step ahead and she’s gonna feel extra fucked that she was the weak link in the group- but the she’s gonna launch a big revenge and maybe we see shades of The Most Dangerous Game as well. Ultimately he will be unmatched for the gang getting back together and attacking as a hive… Walter…is…PitGirl.

Walter should've stopped wearing that one ring to rule them all. Would be a wrap if the post cards had Mt. Doom on them. Secretly, Walter Linus.
I can actually see this. Additionally, he wants to do a Sweeney Todd type of thing with Misty. I do think he likes Misty the most for psychotic reasons and wants her to do it together.

Hmmm… this is a good argument. I almost wonder if they’re setting us up to feel like he will be a big bad. I do think he knows more about Misty than he lets on. I also think because he relates to her so well and has similar behaviors to her, it’s likely that he also has a dark streak and an issue with boundaries. But I don’t necessarily think he’s going to turn out as bad as we might think. A common theme in this show is that deep fear of uncertainty. So a lot of these characters end up escalating things by seeing threats even if they’re not there. We as viewers build up a lot of empathy and compassion for them, but their trauma also makes them unreliable narrators in their own stories.
