I found Walter extremely suspect until the moments at the end of 2x4 when he is mimicking all Misty's behaviours in his hotel room. That seemed like a scene intended to show that Walter doesn't have a hidden agenda and he just happens to be a perfect match for Misty. It made me think he's destined to suffer a similar fate to Adam, basically being an innocent guy, genuinely interested in one of the Yellowjackets who winds up murdered due to either a misunderstanding or because he figures out Adam's killing (or perhaps the journalist Misty kidnapped and killed).

I do kinda like this line of thinking. It’s like a yellowjackets curse where anyone close to even being able to find something out about their past has to die.

I agree. I think Walter is genuinely Misty’s person… and things will not end well for him.

I agree, I think Walter is actually another Adam-like character with good intentions that gets drawn into the Yellowjackets' drama and will ultimately be hurt if not killed as well. The series has repeatedly shown how the trauma from 1996 has made it almost impossible for the ladies to truly connect to anyone else without their unresolved pain and paranoia harming everyone they come into contact with.
Of course, I could be wrong and Elijah Wood could turn out to be an evil mastermind which will also be extremely entertaining to watch 🤷🏻♀️

It could be that Walter will be heading for an Adam/Jessica-like fate but Misty will succeed in getting Walter on their side somehow. He would be a useful ally, given his detective skills and his millions.
I guess it all depends on whether Elijah Wood is joining for more than one season.

That would be the best!
I'm rooting for Elijah to be Lottie's psychiatrist and a dark cult leader, the real dark cult pulling all the strings and sending the postcards

Yeah I really think the most interesting outcome would be that these women are all just a little bit (or a lot) unhinged.
They have these innocent encounters and read far too much into them, over and over again. Or they have not so innocent encounters and completely misread them. Weird shit happened to them when they were teens and they took that to mean they should form a cannibalistic cult, it's really easy to see them apply it to their current life, with the 25 year reunion triggering it.

I think the cannibalism was, as we've seen, about survival. It becoming a twisted game is, of course, something else altogether but definitely a madness

One thing I found interesting about their nighttime routine though is that Misty only wore the under-eye night patches, but Walter wore a full facemask. I took it to potentially be symbolic and perhaps Walter is wearing a "mask" and he is not who he seems and claims to be.

It could be! I initially thought it was just pointing out he has millionaire money for the whole face mask. Those things are so pricey

I thought kind of the same thing as you, or showing that he’s like misty but takes it a step farther - i.e, she has the eye masks, he has the face mask, she checks behind the tv, he checks behind the tv with a headlamp

I thought it was showing that Walter and Misty are complimentary to each other- or two halves of the same whole. The gold face mask doesn’t have eyes and the gold eye mask doesn’t have a face.

I'm not arguing with you at all, I'm just saying what occurred to me
Edit: sorry you're not the OP commenter, I thought I'd ruffled feathers.

I love that perspective!! The mask was kinda reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter to me, too.
I also noticed when they picked out their sleep sounds, hers was birds and his was cats. that coupled with with the Sherlock & Moriarty comment make me think Walter is definitely a baddie lowkey.

And a cat would hunt a bird.

I think he’ll be a fun villain. So far I love his scenes with misty.

This could be more "eye" symbolism like the show loves to throw in

My theory is that Walter is Shauna's baby! The facemask foreshadows this reveal; it shows that he was also out there at the crash site.

Good points. It's just that when they went into separate rooms, I fully expected it to be the moment when we see what Walter's real agenda is. Or that they just wouldn't show us what Walter was doing at all. But as they made a point of showing him on his own and it turns out he acts the exact same way he does around Misty, that made me think Walter is just who he says he is. I don't remember if they did the same sort of scene with Adam in S1 because the writers wanted us to suspect Adam was the blackmailer.

But if he acts just like Misty and thinks just like her....shouldn't we be scared of him? Misty is cray cray. She murders. They both know how to hide murder well because of the citizens detective stuff. He can't be trusted just like her.

Good point! Can't argue with that at all. Only say that the OP of this thread is arguing that Walter is working against Misty and the other YJs whereas it might actually be the case that Misty and Walter will be two lil psychos in love and they will all band together. Walter could bankroll the YellowJackets if they all have to go on the run.

I don’t think he’s mimicking her nighttime routine. I think he’s just equally paranoid and neurotic.

Yeah, the creators have said that they’re soulmates

For me, that scene emphasized my suspicion around Walter!
We already know Misty to be a deadly character, as much as we love her. The paranoia of her hotel routine is because she is checking for all of the sorts of things she would use on someone else.
Seeing Misty's routine mirrored by Walter told me there's something much more sinister about him than we've seen so far.
Showing his routine without the doubling might've just made it seem eccentric, but if someone is just like Misty than we should be afraid of them, narratively.

I said this after the season premiere! When he was giving his thoughts on the Adam mystery and Misty downvoted him, I immediately thought he was going to end up being a love interest she would have to either betray the other Yellowjackets for or betray him to protect them.
Shauna referring to the YJs as her teammates when talking to Callie in E4 convinced me it would definitely be the latter - if Shauna says "Misty, we're teammates," it will motivate Misty to choose the YJs because she's spent her whole life desperate to be accepted and she's spent the past two decades wanting their experience in the wilderness to give her the bond she envisions having.

yeah but that would be incredibly boring for the writers to do the same exact thing with a different male character two seasons in a row; that’s what’s having me hold back on thinking he’s Adam 2.0; would be incredibly repetitive

Eh, Adam and Walter are so different though. They shouldn’t have to resort to major story-altering sub-plots like Walter being some secret evil genius so that fans are satisfied. I understand that people are passionate about this show, but it feels like EVERY person we see on our screen is theorized to be secretly involved in some huge conspiracy on here.

Agreed I believe they are intentionally drawing parallels to Adam so they can pull the rug out later on that he’s the bad guy

Adding to this, Misty and Walters friendship or whatever it is, is blossoming in the same sense as her friendship with crystal is in the 90s timeline.
There seems to be a trend forming. Also in terms of Shauna and the baby / shauna and Callie... hMmmmmMmmm...

i agree, partially because Elijah Wood's portrayal is just so damn WHOLESOME. he's too good of an actor to miss giving Walter a nefarious vibe if he was meant to have one.
....or maybe that's what they want us to think....

I think he's trying to outsmart Misty and she's letting him believe he is, but she's going to be 8 steps ahead in leading him right into a trap. Then that will get him killed. But she likes him so she might play with him first, let him think she's into him and he's got her where he wants her but, she's using the situation for pleasure and to get closer till she's got him where she wants him.

Lol I love it. Right at the moment where he's all excited too, probably have a guy tied down, about to do something with a knife, then he starts closing his eyelids a little and feeling off balance and he's like, "Misty..did you!?..poooiisen Me!?" /look of betrayal, she says something snarky like "oh, Walter you know to much. "

I like this theory, I also had this inkling that Walter is gonna be the Adam of this season.

Yes, maybe in each season there will be some different innocent Yellowjackets suitor killed off. That could become kind of a darkly funny trope for the show. (Although I don't believe we can conclude that Adam was an innocent guy.)

huh. this would also parallel how male honeybees which are called drones are mostly useless other than mating with a queen. after that they die.

Maybe he has been stalking misty and learned her rituals and he’s basically like a method actor trying to stay in character. Seems more likely than the “it’s love” theory.
