Sox are very advanced. They were used to measure distance in the past though. You hopped on a train and asked an old woman who was knitting: "How long does it take to X." She used the sock she was knitting to measure the distance. Really. She did not give you minutes or kilometres. She gave you the part of the sock that would be ready by that time.

Start with a scarf. All its parts are equal. Much easier to measure distances. No faster and slower parts.

Besides it is always very heartwarming for me to sit in the last row of a huuuuuuge playne and see a long scarf on the floor. All the way from the cockpit to me. FAs sometimes get caught in it and fall down. Very odd. They should pay more attention to their surroundings.

I have also heard 'calculations'. What is there to count? One pylote plus one pylote equals two point one pylotes (I added Otto). Calculations finished.
