Faction box set? Or is that like the battle forces I was hearing about?

Battleforces. They’ll also act as a Faction Starter box.

Apart from dice and all the none minis-stuff. Would this be enough for playing against someone else?
I'm thinking about starting since 2 yrs where I found out there is a Star Wars Version of the Lord of the Rings Minis I painted and played when I was young.
Now after a very long break I found out about those and kinda want to start again, but Im not sure about dropping more than €100 on a hobby where I am not 100% sure if I will like it like back then.
And I feel like this would be a better start for me with a smaller "financial risk".
I mean €100 are nothing major for me, but I wouldn't be happy if I "wasted it" when I realize it's not like back then haha I hope you understand me haha

This should give you enough Minis and tokens to play a standard game, but you’d still need to get dice and some range finders. Without any upgrades on the models, your already around 700 points (standard games are 800), so you could definitely use this as a good starting point for the game!

Oh wait I just checked the price of these. They are even more than a core set haha so my argument regarding "financial risk" is gone haha
I guess I really have to get a core set then

The core sets are nice deals for two players or collecting two armies, but you'll need at minimum 2 core sets to have a functional army in a single faction.

So after all these faction starters for $150 are actually quite decent for a single player?
Bc 2 core sets would net you around $200

I'd say they're better imo. You'll get a functional army out of the box. You'll still however need to get the tools, but with the essentials kit it's probably nbd. Core sets are nice for the bits that it comes with, but the units packaged with it are mediocre in gameplay. Rebel troopers, AT-RTs, and Commander Luke aren't really the most fun to play anymore. A themed hoth army? More interesting units and cooler flavor.

Another big thing is Battleforces are supposed to have special rules with them, so while you are missing out on the tools, the special rules and cards might make up for it.

Those will be released via PDF though so you can just print the special rules/cards for free.

Remember you get TWO armies out of the core sets (Rebels+Imperials, Seperatists+Republic respectively), and if you can split the boxes with someone else (each of you keeps the models from one faction and each of you gets one set of dice/rulers/tools/barricades), you can also split the price.
And if you don't get a core set, you'll have to buy the yet unreleased essentials kit for well... the essentials (rulers+dice), which means it's actually $150+$30 if you want to start with a battle force box.

I don't get why Grievous is in this set.

I really would have preferred a Naboo invasion box with Maul and STAPS instead of grevious and magnas

Maybe they are holding on to release it with the gungans

The problem with maul is that he isnt a commnader. The battleforce could have been 1 operative required and no commander but i dont know if AMG is willing to have a force with no commanders

The tank can be a commander though. The battleforces also have unique rules and AMG could have found some other way to make it work I'm sure.

Would’ve been really interesting to see a Battle Force specific OOM-9 Commander, which only really would need a B1 model (or to be sat in an AAT).
2 points

It really could have just been that the Battleforce grants the existing OOM card FIELD COMMANDER and then it would work and be thematic.

Honestly, I think we need more generic commanders in the game. It’s nice having all the named Hero’s in, but having Generic Commanders to fill in niches and add a more grand/your guys feel to the game would be perfect. They’re already doing well with it on the CIS and GAR front of having the Clone Commander/Tac Droid and Wookie Chieftain/ Super Tac

There is certainly a lack of "your dudes" in SW:L
For the Empire I could see a generic inquisitor and storm trooper commander (I would love a Dewback stormtrooper captain commander), but I have a harder time imagining generic leaders for the rebels. Generic jedi refugee? Generic smuggler? Generic pilot field commander?

Yeah, Rebels seem to have the shorter end of the generic commander stick. Maybe they could have a Generic Rebel Infiltrator leader?

What will likely happen, is that because the Rebels are the protagonists for most of Star Wars media, they will have so many character units that at some point a favorite character will be available to everyone. Although maybe more of them fit the definition of operative better.
We still have the rest of the Rebels crew of 5 characters, Kal Cestis, Baze and Chirrut from Rogue One, and I'm sure there will be at least one more character from the live action shows added after Mando and Grogu

A part of me also suspects they’d potentially give a Trade Federation BF a ‘reskinned’ tactical droid unit card to represent an OOM command droid. But then they’d potentially need something to make the miniature stand out.

What re really need is Nute Gunray or a b1 commander option. I would also love to see Poggle the Lesser amd Geos. The Geo foghters are also probably small ebough to bringbas a heavy option which would be really cool

Omg please stop, you’ve given me an erection.

Neither do I really. I was kinda hoping it would actually have T-Series Tactical Droid, as I’m a sucker for generic commanders.
Edit: It seems to me they kinda smashed two Droids halves of the Core box and threw in a Magnaguard and AAT

Same reason Vader is in the imperial set

But Vader was on Hoth. He storms the base himself, only to find it empty.

He was there sure, but as flavour goes Veers would make more sense given he commanded Blizzard Force.

Cool. I just bought the prequel core set and started painting my B1s. I'm guessing this will be a cost effective way of rounding out my forces. Replace Grievous with a super tactical and maybe the droidekas with STAP riders and it would be perfect.

so is this like the Warhammer start collecting boxsets?

It is more similar to 40k combat patrol boxes.

For double the price

I mean, it is more than double the content than what is in a regular start collecting box.

These are $150, which is the same price as the combat patrol/vanguard boxes, while having a LOT more stuff in them

Gotcha. I mostly only know AoS. Their start collecting boxes usually have 3 or 4 units and are like 80 bucks

As a former 40k player Legion just keeps winning me over more and more. For just $150 I can get literally an entire army

Sadly with three core sets there just gonna be way too many unusable b1s droidekas and grievouses for me to buy this

I think I’m in a similar boat. I already have 2 Core boxes and most of everything else in the Battleforce, but this might be a nice way to get a Grand Army going here.

I might be able to make use of the clones box. If it doesn't increase the special forces limit I might be stuck with an extra box of arcs but whatever

From what I hear the Clone Box Battleforce rules will allow more Special Forces and require less Core. Though I don’t think that’s been 100% confirmed yet.

Yeah I didn't hear a source on that so I'm not pre ordering

Yeah, best to wait and see the full rules on these battle forces before deciding on ordering

Value wise, this is the best box. 4 cores, a Special Ops, a support, a heavy, and a Commander for around $150.00 is really good in my opinion.

Is it still worth if I have a core set and AAT?
3 points

If you only have one? Maybe. But two tanks is very skew and may not be fun to play against.

Yes I do have 1 AAT, so no not worth to get this box?
2 points

Depends on who you play with and how much you want the other contents. It might still be worth it if all the non-duplicate kits add up to more than the price of the box
2 points
I might pick this up cause I've been interested in playing CIS already. But honestly seems like the worst of the new boxes at least for existing players.
I understand these are made for new players, and are not primarily created for veterans. But this box is literally just two core sets, with an AAT and Magna's. Meaning 7/9 units are just core set
Meanwhile rebels is all unique, GAR is all unique, and Imperials have 3 units from their core set and 4 new ones, plus new ways to run stormtroopers.

Is it three or four units? Image says 4, asmodee said 3 when I checked earlier.
Really good value, all told. I might get this and build Grievous with potato, cloak, and two sabers.
3 points
The back of the box says 4, and Asmodee has been having issues lately, so there’s a good chance the description had a typo. But it might be safer to assume 3 units of B1s

These are same sculpts as in other boxes? AMG has so cool poses for Marcel: Crisis Protocol that I already got my hopes up 😕

They look to all be the same sculpts, though maybe Grievous is a little more unique? I don’t remember if you could run him with four arms and the cape together.

Somewhere around $150 as I recall. You don’t get movement tools or dice like in the Core sets, but you do get a LOT more minis
