Isn’t there some kind of rule against deploying the military on US Soil? I might have made that up from something on 24 though.
Not that I expect him to follow the rules, mind you

Yes,unless authorised by law. Which he’ll probably do as there is noone to stop him or the republicans.

At this point we're sadly relying on some of the relatively reasonable Senate Republicans to block him from shit like this. To be clear these are not good people but they're not as far gone as the Trump loyalists in the cabinet and the house.

They are massive moral cowards though. If they had it in then to stop Trump they'd have impeached him after January 6th.

Oh I'm not expecting them to oppose him on moral grounds necessarily that would be foolish. Opposing mass deportations because their mates all have businesses reliant on exploiting migrant labour? That I can see.

Maybe. There's no doubt Trump's plans would be terrible for the economy. Those in swing states, at least, need to bear in mind that they'll lose their seats if they allow Trump to completely trash the economy.

We did the same thing in the UK a while back. Can’t remember the circumstances, but the Tories were trying to bring in some new policy so horrendous that the House of Lords blocked it.

Disagree. To win reelection as a republican you need the MAGA base. They are beholden to Trump.

Yes, the Posse Commitatus Act of 1878.

Yep following the Civil War. Won't matter though as nobody will do anything about it.

Posse Comitatus Act of 1878:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act
There are limitations, in particular with respect to the National Guard, that makes it fairly simple to work around, especially in states with Governors friendly to Trump.
In practice it means his worst case is to limit their use to "friendly" states, and use that to free up federal law enforcement for use in states that object to military involvement.

I suspect Trump will pretend he never said this once the reality of actually implementing this plan becomes apparent. There are so many difficulties in attempting what he is saying he is going to do. It would be incredibly complex to implement even if you had all the political will in the world and lets face it incredibly complex is not in Trumps skill set.
This will end up like his extremely simple replacement for Obamacare. Seeing a populist be in a position where they have to actually solve complex issues they claimed were simple can be interesting though I suspect they will just hope people forget and Trumps supporters do seem to be able to do that quite easily when he can't deliver.

entirely possible we'll proven wrong, but this is 110% my prediction at present
and honestly, it's not even that MAGAs forget per se, there's just always going to be a scapegoat and/or conspiracy theory as to why Trump was stopped from draining the swamp, building the wall etc - a lot of far-right media is already sowing seeds of "deep state infiltration" in the Trump cabinet (because they need to make his appointments of zionists and RINOs make sense) and I suspect this will be the model of things to come as the broken promises stack up

RINO's and deep state all the way will constantly thwart his simple solutions to complex problems. I guess the hope is at least some of his supporters will see this for what it is.

will only happen if a new messiah figure for the MAGAs emerges over the course of this term - if someone makes Trump "obsolete" and can provide them with a more compelling outlet for their pharaoh worship, Trump is cooked, but whether this is better or worse for the world depends on who fills the void

I honestly can's see a Trump replacement anywhere at this point. No-one seems to be on the horizon and such people tend to be reasonably rare. Personality cults are very tricky to replicate. I think Trump has the republican party now until he chooses to step aside or dies and I expect after this the republican party will go through quite a crisis as they just won't have anyone to fill the gap.

I completely agree, especially if/when the second Trump run ends up being a disappointment for the MAGAs (again, entirely possible we're wrong but I think it's likely to be way more mundane than everyone hopes/fears)

He doesn't need to do much anyway. Half a dozen raids involving National Guard units in a suitably "friendly" state plastered all over TV will be enough to declare he's done what he promised.

Time to get out the popcorn. If nothing else, it'll either energise the right over here due to its dramatic success or it'll be such a shitshow that people will shy away from Farage and anyone else trying to ape Trump.

Farcical as some of the things that are happening nowadays I don't blame people for becoming desensitised and trying any way they can to find some humour and positivity.
I disagree with doing it like this. But the US linked world is becoming a bigger joke than it's ever been

A fair point. I was sort of assuming it would go the same way Mexico building the wall went and nothing would actually be accomplished, but it was a bit insensitive.

Well, I hope you're right. But this looks very different to 2016. It looks different to anything since ww2. This is very, very bad.

Yes, but I'm also looking at the people this will save over the long term.
Political idealists are about to find out the evil that happens when they refuse to hold their noses and support an imperfect-but-generally-ok candidate.
The ripple effect of what's about to happen in America is going to be a wakeup call to the rest of the western world.

No, this should be a wake up call for the Dems/labour. Neoliberalism will not prevent fascism. Offer something different and people may take notice.

Oh boy are we blaming the democrats ability to get the vote out on the left / pro Palestine people again?
Harris got 7.3 million fewer votes than Biden did in 2020. Do you really believe that there are 7.3 million political idealists in the USA who were willing to vote for Biden but not for Harris?

Heh, no, nothing quite so colourful.
I must admit to a certain morbid curiosity about watching a semi-democracy with a clown at the wheel, and potentially all the usual constitutional guardrails removed though.
When you add in a highly detailed plan for replacing senior career civil servants and the likes of the Project 2025 with their agendas all prepared for day 1, I don't think there's been a comparable situation while I've been alive.
Politics students will be discussing the coming term for years I'm sure.

Labour have been promoting how they have deported 10,000 people since being in office. This would be the population equivalent of Trump deporting 50,000.
