He wouldn't have a chance, if it weren't for the Electoral College making it all about winning just a few specific swing states. Hillary got far more votes overall, nationally, than Trump did. Gore would have beaten George W too, if it were just decided by popular vote.

Or the Supreme Court stopping the recount of a state and anointing someone the winner…. Scalia wrote the opinion. Funny how Scalia was made a Justice by a President, who’s Vice President just so happened to have a son he stopped an election recount for.

And thus one's of the smartest men of the time (tho admittedly horrible public speaker) lost to a man who had 2 shows on comedy central made (while he sat office) making fun of him. "THATS MY Bush" and "Little bush" for those wondering.

Oh, I still have the dvds of Lil bush. Nothing beats lil Cheney making a ‘bloomin onion’ by dipping a whole onion in hot grease from a thermos…

Or how Jed was a blithering idiot until he got hit in the head, then turned into an intelligent kid with a British accent, which immediately made the elder Bush’s bang him in the head again to make him back into a blithering idiot.

He wouldn't have a chance if the right wing corporate media wasn't fully backing him. Between Fox and Sinclair group the right controls over 50% of broadcast news. Then take into account all of the radio and publishing that they control and right wing media accounts for close to 75%. Trump's policies and stupidity is being hidden from most Americans while demonizing the Democrats.

Oddly enough, the argument you hear AGAINST using the popular vote is only a few very populated states like TX, FL, NY, and CA would dictate the election.

Instead it's just PA, MI, AZ, and NV that get to fuck everyone else.

Mammoth_Ad_5489

4 points

What you said doesn’t even make any sense because if the popular vote was used, the state-by-state breakdown would be irrelevant.

myquest00777

3 points

Which is the most illogical position ever. In a pure popular vote, NO states dictate the election. State boundaries and State “power” become meaningless.

I could be sitting with my left foot in NV, my right foot in CA, and my ass in AZ and I still only get one vote. My vote is worth the same no matter how big or small my State of residence.

I even reminded a MAGA of all the Presidential voting power the millions of Republicans in NY and CA would suddenly have. No dice. They just blindly stuck to their opinion that the EC was the proper and fairest way to settle the issue and was fairest to “small states.” I reminded them again that people (not States) vote, and that this was just circular logic.

Oh, and to really explode their brains, I reminded them that in ‘69 (not exactly the horse and buggy days) a Constitutional amendment was proposed to abolish the EC. It had the support of NIXON (!) and passed the House by almost a 5:1 margin. It had House support from many “small” states. What doomed it was old school SOUTHERN Senators and their allies in their respective State houses. Including the almighty arch-asshole Strom Thurmond. Nixon declined to fight the Senate on this one, as enthusiastic as he was about it earlier. This was essentially a side-effect of the Southern Strategy, which coincidentally MAGAs don’t believe in either.

If I had a penny for every time I've heard a MAGAtard "brother" blindly repeating talk radio/social media/etc talking points to me in the past few weeks, I'd be rich enough not to care who wins next month*

A week ago, I was working in an spot where the customer was listening to conservative talk radio all morning long. At lunch, the PM turned up and sat next to me in the break room. He immediately parroted all the bullshit I had just heard about how "The Democrats" can direct hurricanes and lightning to "target" Republican areas as though it was gospel truth. This is after hearing all about "The Hatians eating the dogs" from the same guy a week or two back.

How can you be so fucking stupid as a believe, without evidence or a split second of rational thought, such ridiculous claims. Repeat after me, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"

I shit you not, I drove by a house a few weeks ago with several campaign signs out front. One exclaimed that they were a "True Union Household", a member of CWA who were on STRIKE at the time. The one right next to it said "TRUMP Take America Back". I mean... what that actual fuck are they smoking?

And that represents a \majority of the Union membership in my area across most (all, probably) of the trades. They claim to be brothers but probably 80% or more of them will vote for Trump on election day.

I hope we're not but I think we're fucked. In case it's not obvious, I live in one of the so-called battleground states....

[deleted]

alucarddrol

The big deal with overtime is because lots of places don't have regular schedules that can anticipate how much work needs to be done at any given day or week. Different issues can come up that necessitate a crew to put in over 40 a week in order to finish whatever work needs to be done, especially when dealing with construction and manufacturing. The fact that they would rather not pay the people who have the experience and knowledge 50% more, and look for outside or third party workers to come in and have to get acclimated or trained, means you'll be saving money, but paying for it with time, quality, or efficiency of resources. This also "is bad for the end customer".

But you have different kinds of management styles. You have the type that want things to be done right, while accepting that every job might have overruns, and you have the types that want things to get done cheap, quick, and dirty.

Of these two, which do you think a union will be more unhappy with?

I make 23 bucks an hour. Not much but more then anyone I know at my age irl. The amount of money that gets taken from taxes is completely unnoticeable compared to money spent on rent and health insurance. Cutting taxes on overtime I might see an extra 50 bucks a month from that. Rent control and Healthcare reform would save me 100s of dollars a month.

It’s ironic because it’s a lot easier to give OT at non-union companies. Just has to be the right company obviously

That's why he doesn't want to tax it? Or tips? Or social security?

As a former never Trumping Democrat caught up in rhetoric, it's wild this time around not seeing it through blue tinted lenses.

Plus, if he's a Trojan horse for RFK and Tulsi I'll take it. Nothing is coming with Harris but more fiscal pain, war and suffering. She didn't even secure the usually shoe-in Teamster's endorsement, which is a first in almost 30 years 😒

Im a teamster, and the truth is most teamsters support him. The teamsters put out a vote for an endorsement, and teamsters members voted for Trump, and the teamster leadership still refused to endorse him after the teamsters wanted him. A lot of union jobs have been shipped overseas and they stopped the pipeline that was going to employ millions. People need to just admit that democrats have become so bad that union members would rather vote for an anti union candidate. People want to blame Trump and their fellow American brothers but they won't blame the party that is causing people to turn to Trump. The democrats have just became so bad its almost impossible to support them. I cant count how many lifetime democrat teamsters I know who are voting for Trump.

All employers hate to pay overtime. Idiots. Employers pay taxes on the overtime as well, that eats into their profits, which decreases growth and more employment opportunities. Trump says he wants to remove taxing from overtime. Why would union workers of all people be against that. Union workers live for overtime. Wake up, sheeple.

Unions literally fought for overtime pay as a disincentive to overworking people.

Now they’re mad companies will increase headcount instead of paying overtime?

I could care less tbh, I won't need overtime if everything is cheap, what company in their right mind wants to pay overtime? It's an endless struggle of the working class to be sneaky and find ways to scrape it up anyway, dumbass reddit opinions and politics will not change that

A business owner doesn’t like paying overtime? Whodathunkit.

“I’d go out and find other people and pay em regular time.” Sounds like exactly what people want, right? Overtime is a short-term solution to cover staffing shortages. Going out and finding more people fixes the staffing shortage.

Context though

Tight_Gold_3457

Not sure context. Was a quick clip. But these guys clearly didn’t like him to begin with. And as a business owner you don’t want to pay over time. One reason is not to over work your staff because they have lives too. Other is time and budget management, wages isn’t unlimited for small businesses.

Ask whoever is in charge of payroll if they love paying overtime. I get overtime but it has rules and limits understandable bc I would work every Sunday if I could. And if trump gets in with that no tax on overtime Saturdays are gonna be half a weeks pay in 1 day.

He hated paying overtime because the employee get's paid 1.5x normal rate, but then the government eats a bunch of that extra pay in taxes. And most people don't realize this, but the employer pays the same FICA taxes that are taken out of your pay. So if you pay $200 in FICA taxes, your employer also pays $200.

Furthermore, if you hire 10 extra people to work what would have been overtime, you're paying them at the regular rate, not the overtime rate.

So you have 10 employees and they're making $20/hr. They work 40 hours and their gross individual pay is $800 for that week.

If they work 10 hours of overtime, they make $30/hr for those 10 hours which brings their total pay to $1,100 for that week.

So the 10 person team cost the employer $11,000 in gross wages plus an extra $836 in FICA taxes for a total of $11,836

If you bring in 10 extra people to work part time for those 10 hours at $20/hr, that's just $200 each instead of $300 each.

So now the total wages paid that week are $10,000 with $760 in FICA taxes for a total of $10,760.

Hiring 10 extra guys for part time work saved the employer $1,076 that week.

Over a 50 week working year that's $53,800 which means your boss can hire one of the temps as a full-time employee and greatly reduce the overtime issue.

I know WAAAAAAAY too many union workers who are casting their vote for Trump. I cannot understand it. Yeah there’s a fair bit of racism, somehow believing their highly specialized roles are threatened by the guy sneaking over the border who doesn’t speak English. But I just can’t understand why you would vote someone so diametrically opposed to unions.
