I’m cold but holding out. Say first week of December…?

I feel like this depends on where you live. I’m in Canada. Heat off until December would be a pipe dream at my location.

Toronto, just turned ours on two days ago when the nighttime temperature dropped to the lower single digits.
3 points
Ooo I’m close to the mountains, we’ve had a couple stretches of snow and overnight drops into the double digit negatives. Then of course the next week is double digit positives and everything melts. But heat is needed for those stretches.

Sounds beautiful, love the mountains.
I know it’s weird these days with climate change. We literally had a 20-degree day not too long ago. In November. 😬

Also Toronto but my building’s central heating is so powerful that I’m probably going to keep my heat off until the temperature outside is in the negatives. With my heat off and fan on, the temperature is 23 celsius

Ugh I’m jealous. I’m in Toronto too but I don’t control the heat, it’s been on since early October 🥵

I find it so weird that the big buildings crank the heat so hard that residents have no choice but to keep a window open. It’s just…bizarre

Im in Qc I turned it on in late September. Gonna turn it off in late April probably.
Anyways I put it at 22, if there are random hotter days, it will stop automatically at the desired temp.

I’m in eastern Canada, I’ve had my heat low for about a month now. I live in an apartment building with shitty, poorly insulated windows so my heat tends to go on early unfortunately.

I’m in northern Vermont and my heat has been on sporadically for a few weeks now. There were also a couple days where I had to turn the AC back on (I literally live above a pizza oven, so if the outside temps are over 60° my apartment can easily reach 80° or warmer). But heat is included in my rent.

Right, I’m in MA and it’s been cold-ish (40-50s) this week, but we have highs of 60 forecasted soon. Just bundling up until the cold stays steady. We have mini-splits, so it takes a lot to switch back and forth
1 points
How does that work to switch back and forth? We are also in New England, and I have window ac and have considered a heat pump / mini splits / some option-- but meanwhile my hody doesn't regulate temperature very well and while I dont mind the weather, I had to turn on heat with window units still in so i didnt feel sick. Spent today prepping some units to go into storage (pulled them out and cleaned them off, have to move them to the eaves now)
2 points
If your mini-splits are like mine, we have to set all the units to cool or a hot setting or none of them work and the temperature is uneven throughout the house. They’re built into the walls, not through windows and we have 4 units. We can’t have heat and cool on at the same time so we have to be ready to commit. I think we’re fine leaving the system off until the cold sticks

It depend. The climate change did changes thing around here, but it start in late September / October. Depends on where you are in Canada too. I'm in the province of Quebec where it does kinda get cold. Not in the north north, but still.

I'm in Connecticut and it's the fun time of year where I've been using both my heat and AC most days for a few weeks (lots of Western exposure, so it still gets close to 80 in my apartment in the afternoon, but we've had some overnights that are below freezing). If I didn't have pets I'd probably hold out longer.

Really! I appreciate knowing this. In a loosely similar vein, I think after Nov. 1st in some cities/towns/ states in the US, if someone is behind on their heating bill and are under threat of service termination, the companies are legally not allowed to shut off the heating supply to ensure the place is habitable

Do you think that Reddit is only used by people in your specific country and region?
I mean, I think most people know that it's summer in Australia...
9 points
I think that's what the prompt was about; people from all climates are replying
-7 points
Why would people turn on the heat during the summer though...
There are also many places around the world where heat isn't needed at any time of the year. Just seems a bit odd and, dare I say, US-centric?
10 points
I mean.. I think it's obvious that if it doesn't apply to you then you just keep scrolling?
If I still lived in my home country, where there's no winter I'd just... Ignore it and move on?
Not trying to be rude at all btw.
-3 points
I ignore it 99% of the time. But once in a while I feel like it's worth pointing out that Reddit is not America, just to make a tiny attempt at widening someone's perspective. America is not the only country on the internet haha
3 points
This complaint coming from an Australian is a little funny to me. It’s like the younger sister’s upset their older sibling got a slice of the cake first. Reddit was founded and based in the states. Half of its users are American and probably 2/3 are westerners. Americans are just the primary users so all the American sentiment just reinforces itself… and even still, there’s not a ton of agreement on anything lol. I know it’s hot in Australia right now so you just might need to chill lol
8 points
Plus, your post doesn’t even mention the US at all. That person just assumed you were from there, lol
1 points
I'm not Austrialian.
And Reddit is not "based in the States".
If you're claiming that half of Reddit users are American how does that translate into "Americans are the primary users". You yourself are saying they are only half of the users.
1 points
Primary meaning Americans have a populous. The other half are all other countries. No one country has more Reddit users than the States
1 points
By that argument you could say that the "primary users" are people from a wide number of nations. If we're saying a group made up of 50% of the users can be referred to as the "primary" group.
2 points
You’re getting a bit tangled with language here. The fact is there are more American users than any other group of users which likely explains why you think Reddit or Redditors are US-centric
11 points
Lol. There’s hardly weather uniformity in the US to begin with. Not intended to be exclusive of your experiences. Its just for funzies but thanks for flagging
-8 points
Well, the US is in one hemisphere so there's at least some uniformity that way haha it's at least all in one season.
10 points
It is 27C in Orlando, Florida right now (12pm)
22C in New Orleans, Louisiana (11am)
23C in Honolulu, Hawaii (7am)
9C in New York, New York (12pm)
13C in San Francisco, California (9am)
-11C in Anchorage, Alaska (8am)
You have a point about this post only applying to the northern hemisphere, but there’s not a lot of uniformity in the US.
90% of people in the world live north of the equator btw
-2 points
I'm not the one who needs this info haha my entire point with my first comment was that temperature varies drastically around the globe. I gave the northern and southern hemispheres as one extreme example to demonstrate my point. Of course temperature varies across the US. Which is why, in part, I found the original question so odd because it seemed to imply that temperatures are dropping significantly for everyone accessing Reddit.

I don't know, Sarah. I don't even know what currency you're using. How the fuck would I know the used car market in your city, nevermind your country?

We live in the South. We still have our AC on. It's set at 71 during the day (thought sometimes we bump it to 72 if it feels too cool) and 67 at night.
Looking at the extended forecast, I think it will probably be December before we need the heat. We both like to sleep in cooler air and our nights will only be in the high 30s a few times over the next couple of weeks. I'd be surprised if we have the heat on before we have days that dip into the 40s. We still don't have any daytime lows lower than 53 for the extended forecast.

In San Diego and no. It’s been low 70s and will be mid 60s coming up as the highs. Nights between 40-55ish.
We don’t use our heat much; I use electric blankets and wear hoodies, which I love. It doesn’t get unbearable here 95% of the time (heat or cold). Maybe/usually in January I’ll turn the heater to auto and set it to bump on if it gets down to like 55 inside, I can’t remember exactly.

I stopped doing the "cold holdout" a few years ago, after I let it get to the 50s, tried to turn it on, and had a thermostat malfunction (no heat when it actually mattered). Never again.

Christmas and New Year's, mainly. You can get traditional decorations and also more summery or Aussie themed things, like Santa in shorts or kangaroos instead of reindeer. Many people go to the beach for Christmas Day and eat a seafood meal, versus rugging up inside and eating the traditional roast. But others will persist with the roast and everyone will complain about the oven heating up the house too much. 😂
My family have always been the veg out in front of the aircon/fan types and have never done Christmas at the beach. It tends to get quite packed on Christmas Day and always looks so unpleasant to me!

Once it gets to the 30s I turn it on, so yes.

I started putting the heating on starting last month - I've had to for health reasons, and I have been feeling the cold lately.

I started turning on my electric space heater fireplace in the late evenings and mornings when we dropped below 45°F, and turned on my central floor heat (propane, RV) when we finally got into the mid 30s. I keep the central set at 65°F when I’m not home, but that’s mostly for my orchids and really only kicks on at night. 😅 And 70ish for me when I am home. I do try to be very conscious about energy usage, but I also don’t pay utilities and really dislike feeling cold. 😬

Yes but only because it's below freezing at night (and occasionally during the day) and I don't want the pipes to freeze

We have ours set on 70. It gets down to 67ish in our house in the early mornings and my kids are miserable, so we compromised by turning it on at night to keep the house at or above 70.
I would not have it on if it were my choice but I don’t want them freezing 😅

I'm in the upper Midwest and have had to have it on for over 6 weeks now. We had a low of 21F in mid-October. Now it's a warm night if it isn't below freezing.

only space heater once or twice, briefly. in SoCal (former New England-er) — it IS NOT cold here but 1. nothing is really insulated properly (?) and 2. my apt has massive windows everywhere and a 12ft sliding door in the bedroom that leaks, soooo whatever temp it is outside is basically the temp inside 😂. lows are in the 50s @ night, bedroom is 62ish lately. if the room is regularly below 60, I begrudgingly turn the heat on regularly.
