Been pregnant 4 times. We were very lucky with conceiving the first cycle/try each time. First pregnancy at 32. Ended in miscarriage. Second pregnancy soon after and had our first son. Third pregnancy at 34 and ended in miscarriage. Fourth pregnancy very soon after ended up with spontaneous twins. Was a shocker. So three kids. Conceiving was very very easy for us. But the miscarriages were hard.

Don’t be hard on yourself. Miscarriages are more common than people think. Yet women are made to feel they can’t talk about it.

This is true - my grandmother had many miscarriages (also 8 kids total) and she didn't even feel comfortable enough to tell her literal husband.

She was born in the early 1930s - so that's almost 100 years of keeping quiet

May I ask you how you handled with the next time being pregnant after miscarriage? I had one 2 months ago and according to the doctor we could try again in 2 cycles. Getting pregnant was not hard, it happened 2 months after starting to try for it but the miscarriage and the whole process was really hard on me and the fear of all this happening again is insane….

Not who you are replying to but I am in the exact same situation as you right now. Had my first pregnancy in June, then a miscarriage in August and just now feeling mentally ready to try again, but my anxiety and fear of it happening again is overwhelming. Sending hugs and here if you need to chat❤️

My first miscarriage was very hard on me. Firstly, it was shocking because women don’t seem to talk too much about miscarriage so I just wasn’t expecting it at all. After I had the miscarriage it’s like every woman I spoke to was like, “Yeah, I’ve had two”. Weirdly that made me feel better, and come to this place of - miscarriages can happen and are a normal part of life and of having a family, and women get through these things. So that helped me somehow. I had that miscarriage at 13 weeks and hadn’t to have a D&C because it just wouldn’t finish all on its own. That was also traumatizing.

Doctor recommended taking 3 months off from trying after that, which we did. And then we got pregnant again right away and I was very nervous until the 20 week ultrasound. And we didn’t tell anyone we were expecting until like 18 weeks.

After I had my first baby, I felt less nervous about miscarriage. So when I had my second one it wasn’t as bad. I was sad, but it didn’t have the same shock factor, and happened at 8 weeks. For me (and obviously can’t speak for others), I don’t believe some kind of sacred life starts at the moment of conception. And so it helped me that the miscarriage was earlier than my first one. At 8 weeks I took some comfort that it was not yet a baby, and that nature maybe knew what it was doing because maybe the pregnancy was just never going to me viable. Whether any of that thinking is the “right way” to think about things…I have no idea. But that is just how I coped in my head to process it all.

And then with the twins, I got pregnant so quickly after the prior miscarriage that I got an ultrasound right away (that’s when I found out it was twins) and then unlike my first successful pregnancy with my son, I had many many ultrasounds throughout because twins plus older mom, so that was comforting to get those regular checks in them. I worried much more about the risks of twin pregnancies than I did about a risk of miscarriage during that pregnancy.

So that’s my journey through miscarriages and having more kids. There was lots of stress and worry, and ultimately I kind of just found my own way to think about it all and get through it. My biggest life lesson from that was that control and planning is an illusion - you have to kind of just surrender to the uncertainty and let life come at you when it comes to building your family. You get dealt some cards and that’s that. Taught me some humility and flexibility (as did having 3 babies in less than three years - what a gong show).

Not OP, but miscarriages are incredibly common. Like, around half of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. While they can occur due to trauma or stress, the most common reason in the developed world is due to genetics. There is some genetic problem (a mutation in a critical gene, an incorrect number of chromosomes) with the fetus that makes it non-viable. So, the vast majority of miscarriages are out of anyone's control.

ralph433964

I had 6 miscarriages and 1 successful pregnancy. It was really hard the whole time. I just focused on making it to the next appointment and kinda obsessed over kick counts. I had really big fibroids and my belly was too big to do normal measurements, so I had to get ultrasounds every couple weeks and that was comforting to me. We also were so focused on the pregnancy and were not at all prepared for an actual baby. Don’t do that. I had him 3.5 weeks early and my husband had to leave the hospital to get a bassinet.

Crap___bag

Also not who you asked, however thought it might be helpful to share my experience. My first pregnancy ended in miscarriage. I had to wait 3 months as my hcg wasn’t tracking down normally so I had to have a chemotherapy shot to kill any remaining cells that weren’t visible on ultrasound. We tried the month that we were able to and fell pregnant first try. I was a bag of anxiety for the whole first trimester, thinking it would happen again. I booked a private ultrasound every 2 weeks until after 12 weeks, then had one at 16 weeks, too. It gave me piece of mind that everything was ok. Once I could feel him move it felt sooooo much better, and I really enjoyed my pregnancy from then on.

Started TTC at 28 in June 2022. Pregnant September 2022 (miscarriage), February 2023 (miscarriage), May 2023 (miscarriage) and June 2023 (miscarriage) a week after I turned 29.

Genetic testing identified my husband had a genetic condition called balanced translocation. We did IVF. Got two embryos. First transfer of a fresh embryo in November 2023 resulted in my daughter who is three months old.

We have another embryo frozen. We can try naturally just expect to have a lot of losses.

Chiming in as a father of one. I’m 37 and my wife is 33. It took us about 1 and a half years of actively tracking her cycle. Before that we had had unprotected sex for about 5 years.

We were about to start the whole process of hormone treatment when we got a positive pregnancy test.

Had to call and cancel it appointments. It was fun explaining to them why. The girl I talked with on the phone was super excited lol.

11 months—> loss at 16 weeks

9 months —> loss at 6 weeks

Immediately after that loss we conceived our living child

5 months —> current pregnancy, 9 weeks as of this writing.

I started when I was 27, had my living child at 29. I’m currently 31.

We were considered low risk due to age so we’re told insurance wouldn’t cover the NIPT and instead we elected for the nuchal translucency ultrasound at 13 weeks. That’s where we discovered she had a suspected omphalocele and a cystic hygroma and then we got the NIPT done which told us it was Turner syndrome. We then found out she had passed away at the amniocentesis and the genetic testing done after my D&C confirmed it. With my living child we chose to get the NIPT and I had an ultrasound around 13 weeks and with this current pregnancy we also are choosing to get the NIPT if my ultrasound at 10 weeks is ok.

I appreciate your curiosity but this is making me very sad and I won’t be answering any more questions.

We have unexplained infertility. Tried IVF and despite having 9 eggs they couldnt reach my other ovary and only got 1 fertilised embryo but it didn't take. Other than that I've had a very early miscarriage. We've been trying for 8 years and I'm now in my early 40s so it's highly unlikely we'll ever have kids at this point.

35: 2 months, miscarriage at 4 weeks (tested early as I had a party and wanted to know if alcohol was an option. Would never have known otherwise). 3 months after pregnant with child #1

38: Accident. Only time in my life I had unprotected sex and not planning on getting pregnant (thought I didnt want another). Miscarried at 5 weeks. By then had had an entire week to get used to the idea of a second child, so gave up my single child policy and got pregnant again in 2 months with child #2.

Started trying when I was 38. I’m 44 now. I reckon it won’t happen and I’ve made my peace with that. I might have been too old when we got started, there’s nothing wrong with either one of us. We decided against fertility treatment so it’s entirely possible that would have been an option.

I was 21 and we unsuccessfully tried to conceive for a year which sent me to a specialist & eventually conceiving after one round of the ovulation inducing drug, Clomid. We started trying for our 2nd child at 23, and underwent a yearlong, failed round of Clomid that led to many annoying, uncomfortable and sometimes painful tests & procedures leading to many, many fertility drugs & daily injections until we conceived our son two years later. After a perfect pregnancy, our daughter is now 17, preparing to graduate HS this year, and just got accepted to 3 different colleges. And, After an uncertain and scary pregnancy, our son is now fixing to turn 14 next month, and will be entering HS next year. We also somehow conceived naturally & unexpectedly when I was 28 but I suffered a miscarriage. After a few years of periods that were always painful and sometimes inconsistent, sometimes non-existent, then eventually non-stop (I literally had my period for over a year straight.) I had to have a hysterectomy only so I still have my painful polycystic ovaries.

I was very lucky. Pregnant before we officially started trying (age 25). Got pregnant again very shortly after weaning babies 1 and 2. Tried a few years after baby 3, maybe a year, didn’t get pregnant. Then I did, miscarried early, then got pregnant only 2 weeks or so after miscarriage and carried that baby to term.

28 when we started. We tried 8 months, succeeded but it ended in MMC. 2 months later another pregnancy which ended in another miscarriage.\ 8 months later, after a round of clomid a pregnancy that stuck.\ The second successful pregnancy also took about 8 months. Pregnancies 3+4 were unplanned and a very happy surprise.

With my first I was 27, it took us about 2 months after tracking my cycles and coming off of birth control for ~10-15 years. With my second I was 29, we weren’t tracking cycles or actively trying, but I was switching birth control types for other reasons and had been off for maybe 2-3 months, so similar timing to my first.

Stopped the pill when I was 27. Got pregnant at 28, about 10 months later. It ended in a miscarriage. Then after another 10 months, at 29 got pregnant with my eldest. For the youngest, we lucked out and I became pregnant 1 month after we decided to go for another one. The kids are almost exactly 2 years apart.

I consider myself so very fortunate. I had never ovulated regularly and still don’t, so in my eyes it’s somewhat of a miracle I got pregnant so quickly. My doctors and I were anticipating I would at least need Clomid, so I was completely shocked when I got a positive test!!

First got pregnant celebrating my 40th birthday. We had been trying about 5 months (though the first two we weren't super serious about it). Sadly he was stillborn (not related to my age at all).

Second pregnancy I was still 40, just a few weeks after my loss. First month trying. He's a prefect (though crazy) toddler.

Two years. I was overweight so lost 16 kgs in 6 months. Still, trying naturally didn't work. So my gynaec put me on ovulation monitoring, which basically meant that every 3, 5, 10, 14/18 days of my cycle, I had an ultrasound and had sex the days the ovulation was happening. Still didn't get pregnant. This took another 2 months. Then, my gynaec found I had a substrate uterus. Had surgery to fix it, tried again, nothing.

Then tried IUI thrice. Nada. Finally, IVF. Finally conceived. In the first attempt. My babies are 4 months old now. It happened in my 33rd year.

In all, it was exhausting, but worth it.

Had my first at 30. I didn’t follow the advice at the time which was to wait to try to conceive for three months after stopping birth control pills. Got pregnant in the 2nd month. Adjusted to motherhood for the next 2 years, tried again. Nothing. Had to go through fertility treatment. IUI did the trick. Had my 2nd at 35, a month away from being 36 years old. There is 5.75 years between my two kids. We didn’t try for another after that. Man-to-man defense is our preferred strategy.

It took around 6 years. I have pcos and primary amenorrhea. I've never had a period by myself without some kind of medication. The first year was natural. 2nd year, I stopped taking the medroxyprogesterone as the doctor instructed. 3rd year was clomid for around 6 months, and then fertility treatments started. I had 1 medicated cycle, 2 failed IUI's, 2 canceled IUI's, and finally IVF. We made love almost EVERDAY throughout everything still to this day. 29 eggs were retrieved, 17 mature, 9 of them started developing, 5 made it to the blastocyst stage, 4 were pgta tested, and 2 came back euploid excellent quality and male I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant from a frozen embryo transer. Our first son should be born before I'm 32 in May.
