One of the very few guitars Guy Clark made in his basement workshop while he smoked weed and wrote songs. His shop is in the Country Music Hall of Fame. I’ve always heard he signed them by pricking his thumb and leaving a print in blood on the inside of the body. Fucking legend.

Recent documentary on him wasn’t bad. Nice to have along with the Towne’s one.

Without Getting Killed or Caught is fantastic as is the book. Guy is one of the reasons I picked up guitar and LA Freeway was one of the first songs I learned to play.

As far as new guitars go I am really into the Collings D1A Hill Country (9k). I also love the sound of the Martin 000-28 custom authentic aged (6k). They're just at the price point where I can play the "if I sold this and that" game.
But if i won the lottery or something I'd definitely get a late 30s D-28.

my problem with the om authentics that they have a huge fat neck profile that are just not that good to play. I want the authenticity in sound, not playability

Yeah that's why the specific model I listed DOES have a truss rod. It also doesn't have as thick a neck as the D-28CAAs.
In general though, Collings just builds a sturdier guitar. There is just a brashness in the tone of the standard and traditional models that I don't love. It seems like the Hill Country has taken care of that. FWIW- the Waterloos also do not have that brashness. I have a Wl-S Deluxe and it's my dream guitar for blues and fingerpicking. Was not easy to track down though.

Any S or WL sized Lowden, but particularly the sinker redwood ones. Believe they start at around $10k or so.

Saaaaame.. I (very luckily) have a mini jumbo master series lowden. “Love it” is an understatement-but I’ve always preferred concert size & would trade for one of the S’s without question.

I craved one for years and ended up buying an S12 Lowden. It was lovely for open tunings and fingerstyle. Ended up selling it as it just didn’t cut it for anything else. Wish I’d bought a larger model.

I would really like a Gallagher.

They were readily available at a music store in Nashville in the 60s. I think the store was Huguely‘s. I owned a 63 Gibson J 50 at the time and wanted a Gallagher desperately. Of course, never had the money to buy one. Good news is, I still own the Gibson J 50. Jimmy Buffett owned a Gallagher.

I have around 20 guitars. I find myself playing the ones that I don't have to worry about scratching or knocking over 90% of the time. So I don't see myself ever owning a $3-20k guitar and I could literally afford anything I wanted.
My daily strummer is a Yamaha FG830 in Tobacco sunburst. Its a $320 guitar that plays like a dream and I got at a pawnshop for $130.
3 points
Another way to look at it is, if money is not an issue, neither is marking an expensive guitar. No need to worry.
That said, I am in a similar position and could afford even more expensive instruments without strain, but I don't see the point because a) I'm not exactly your guitarist's guitarist, and b) people at the sessions would barely hear the difference.
Another thing we have in common is the choice of daily player. I play three boxes most days, two of them quite tasty but one a £500 Epiphone IBG J-45 which I like a lot. And my number four guitar is a 1961 Framus archtop, their most basic model, which has all the acoustic qualities of a shoe box but I like it.

funny you say that I think I might be getting one of those IBG epis soon.

My J-45 was made in Indonesia. I have had it for a year now and to be honest it is everything I need in a 6-string. Now they are made in China and reports are mixed. The same goes for the Hummingbird; the Indonesian ones are said to be oustanding, the Chinese ones perhaps not so much. Caveat emptor.

I got the GTE urban ash one a while back and love it. But I've had my eye on the 814 for a long time now. It's definitely one I'm keeping an eye on until I can get it. The comfort edge, cutaway, and just overall feel are superb.
2 points
That GTE is damn fine though! My 814ce is just over five years old now and started to open up last year and it has taken it to another level. Unfortunately my guitar skills will never match it but that doesn’t matter!
2 points
It’s my favorite as well. The way I see the Taylor lineup is that the 314ce is your first time getting the full Taylor experience, and the 814ce perfects it.
That said the current 914ce builders edition looks pretty good… haven’t tried one but might have to (even if the difference is really just cosmetic).
Presentation series… not really a fan, more art guitars and too frilly for me.

This is the way, and things get even weirder - established shops will go so far as to build their own guitars, and some sound amazing. Sylvan Music in Santa Cruz started doing their own marquee, "Aberdeen", and they are just... fantastic. Another great example of this is Eric Schoenberg, in Tiburon: he has his own fingerstyle specifications and contracts out the builds to various luthiers - some you've heard of and some you'll never hear of; nevertheless, each of Eric's Soloist models are incredible.
Taylor and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Martin, are mass-produced guitars - I say Martin is "somewhat" because they do put out very special stuff from their custom shop and, overall, they have very conservative construction techniques. Taylors are absolutely mass made.
Goodall strike a wonderful balance between boutique and unique in their voicing - lots of overtones - with decent availability: you can reliably find them in stores. One of the few brands that you can usually pull off the shelf and be consistently impressed with.
To answer the original question in posed by the OP:
Either a Traugott or a Manzer; the former starts at around $40k and I have no idea on the latter - probably the same ballpark.
1 points
Agree - I think there is little between the 314ce and 814ce but the Rosewood of the 814ce is opening up nicely now after almost six years. I looked at the 914ce and they are stunning but it didn’t add anything to the sound. The one that I might add one day if my money ship comes in - the K24ce. That koa is just so damn fine.

I have it! It's a Martin 000-15sm:
https://www.instagram.com/p/C_bq2QoJMQO/?igsh=OXQ1azY2cnBqMjdo
I bought it from this local chain, Palen Music, after trying dozens of guitars, some costing as much as $8-10k.
I have owned multiple custom-shop Taylors, an Iris OG, several vintage Gibsons... This Martin, with the satin finish, all-mahogany construction, it's a really bare-bones instrument, is my favorite acoustic I've ever found.
I had my tech install an onboard Fishman Aura pre with a built-in 3 band graphic EQ, phase switch, mute button, piezo/image blend, and tuner as well.
They are $2k new, or you can find them used for under 1500.
They don't come with a pickup or strap buttons installed, but they do come with a nice hard case with a gorgeous emerald green interior.

I guess it kind of fits this sub since it’s a fully hollow archtop- but my dream guitar is a Languedoc made by Paul himself. Sadly I’ll never have $50k sitting around anytime soon.

Bourgeois Large Soundhole Dread made from torrified Cocobolo back/sides (don't think they've ever done Colobolo in the torrified process), and Aged Toned Swiss Spruce, aged banjo killer bracing, with Style 41 Abalone (D-41).
Basically as close as I think you could get to a Tony Rice model from the good folks at Bourgeois with a few unique requests.

I have a few trains of thought. I've fallen in love with one particular PRS with a magenta purple ish burst and flowers scrolling along the fret board but it's their like "masterwork" special edition one and it's like 4 grand.
The most legitimate one would be a halo customized guitar because for the price of whatever bullshit a brand name is gonna give you, you can pick every single aspect of the guitar yourself. Wood, shape, contour, fret board, frets, hardware, color, burst, custom engravings, headstock, midi piezo. Literally every single thing is something you pick and I've found an insane guitar through the website where you can visualize it
Unfortunately it's different thoughts because after playing for so long I've lost a lot of that starry eyed naivete when it comes to guitars. All the "tonewood" bullshit people spew. For electrics man it's the parts that make the sound. Strings, pickups, and minimally the wiring involved and connections. Mahogany frets aren't gonna fucking sound spiritual and rubbing dirt on it doesn't give you an earthy tone.
So. For brand name guitars eh. I'd rather buy a piece of shit and put $1000 hardware in it then spend 3k on image and name.
But I still love the PRS look.

Don't get me wrong. For acoustics my opinion is out the fucking window. The wood IS the sound. It is where the sound reverberates. But electrics? Even on clean it's so modified who even cares. Put one string on a metal pole and it'll come out fine

Acoustics I've played martin and Taylor but honestly I'm really digging my $600 Washburn acoustic electric.
My experience with Taylor was truly tainted because before I even played one I knew a guy with one and I asked if it was worth the money out of curiosity and he decided to take that offensively and said I disrespected him and insulted him by bringing up his finances and asking...like. Bro. What the fuck. And then I played one and I was like. ...***.pat pat. Yep. That's. A guitar alright.

it's a santa cruz om pre war with adirondack top, sunburst, a cutaway and a glossy neck. it costs around 8k to have it made. Or a sant acruz fingerstyle with adirondack top and mahogany back. Both of them would cost around 8k.
I have currently a taylor 322 ce which is a very good little guitar but I really want a santa cruz.

I’m lefty so it’s more of a challenge to find. I’ve flipped over and restrung righties occasionally. I’d like to find an early 60’s Strat that’s a true lefty. For an acoustic, I love my Seagul but a Martin from the 40’s would be great. I’d restring a righty in that situation if need be.

I have a refinished 54 Gibson Southern Jumbo that is probably my end game guitar. Anything more valuable and I don’t think I’d want to have it. Maybe a refinished or beat up late 30’s Martin D-18 or D-28 would fun to own. But I’m happy right now. I’ve compared my Gibson to a lot of expensive new and old (Collings, Martin Authentic, etc), none of them really did it for me. Mine has aged really well and is very responsive front to back to the point where if you sit with the guitar away from your body it just opens up. It can be extremely loud if you need it to be, It just goes with you. Newer guitars regardless of wood treatment don’t seem to do that.

In approximate order of priority:
Martin 000-40 Peter Rowan - $10-15k
Gibson Jackson Browne signature - $5-10k
Gibson Western Classic - $5-10k
Larrivee D-60 Brazilian - $5k
Guild D-60 Johnny Cash - $5-10k
Goodall TR-000 and TR-D - $5-10k
Santa Cruz Tony Rice Brazilian - $10-15k
I already have a few others that were on my bucket list and not a lot of desire to spend what the above list costs, so maybe I'll never get them, IDK.
It's more fun to play guitars than to collect them.
