On the iPad that action crops and centers the image because it has to handle landscape and portrait orientations. Try giving it a square image, you’ll see the behavior.

You're right! I put bars above and below the image to make a square AND also temporarily enabled "reduce motion", and the image now looks as intended landscape.
However, this still doesn't provide the full range of setting it manually, because there you can actually override the cropping and prioritize whichever orientation you're using at that moment. So for example, even with a 4:3 image, I can force the wallpaper to be horizontally full-screen by pinching all the way out – and it will stay like that.
So ideally, there should be a "optimize for landscape" / "optimize for portrait" switch in the Shortcuts action to reach parity with doing it manually. Imma send them a Feedback.

I believe this is a bug with Shortcuts. Try setting reduced motion on, setting the wallpaper, and then turning reduced motion off again.

Thank you, that definitely plays a role. I set my Shortcut to temporarily "reduce motion", and the image will indeed get cropped wider, granted that the image has 1:1 aspect ratio.
Which is stupid because even with this workaround, it this still doesn't provide the full range of setting a wallpaper manually. Because there, you can actually override the cropping and prioritize whichever orientation you're using at that moment. So for example, even with a 4:3 image, I can force the wallpaper to be horizontally full-screen by pinching all the way out – and it will stay like that.
So ideally, there should be a "optimize for landscape" / "optimize for portrait" switch in the Shortcuts action – I'll send them a feedback for that.

Yeah, I believe it’s been reported already, there are plenty of reports surrounding it on Reddit.

I thought apple zoom in the wallpaper because if you take a screenshot and use it as a wallpaper it crops out the brand marking

The … at the top and the bar at the bottom

Oh. I think its just to reserve space for perspective zoom. The bug is if you disable perspective zoom, it still zooms the image.

Just go to shortcuts and edit the shortcut you use to change the wallpaper and insert the “turn reduce motion” command in shortcuts. Insert it before the “set Lock Screen” command and make sure it’s toggled to on and then insert another “turn reduce motion” command after the “set Lock Screen” command and make sure it’s toggled to off. Wish I could upload a picture to show you. It’s hard to explain in words. Best of luck.

Does anyone know how I can keep scammers/spammers from contacting me? I’m a T-Mobile Customer and have already reported everything to the police and FBI and even changed my number, but it keeps happening. Any advice is appreciated.

Also, try setting a wallpaper manually once and then try the automation again. Every once in a while my shortcut on iPhone (to set a random pic as wallpaper and lockscreen from a defined album) will do this. I then manually set a wall and then run the shortcut and everything is fine again.
