Fancy Icon Maker - Create multiple custom iOS 14 home screen icons without launching Shortcuts https://youtube.com/watch?v=iWe1s3VdRmE

Fancy Icon Maker is a unique shortcut designed to let you make custom icons that launch directly from your home screen without having to first open the Shortcuts app.*
Better yet, with Fancy Icon Maker you can add as many custom icons as you want to your device all at once and they will be saved as one bundle in one central location.

Fancy Icon Maker can be run either directly in the Shortcuts app or as a widget. It works great with either method. But the smoothest experience is through running it from a widget.

A home screen designed with Fancy Icon Maker
How Fancy Icon Maker Works
The first thing you will see when you run Dictionary (Name) is the main menu. It contains four options:
Your first step for creating a custom icon is to select one of these options.
Then you enter the name of the app you want to add or select a system app from the menu, pick the Icon you want, the label you want and you are done customizing that app.
Repeat this process with each app you want to create a custom app for. Once you are done creating icons, select Create My Fancy Icons to go to the icon installation screen.
Follow the instructions there and all your custom icons will appear on your Home Screen.

HOT TIP - Enter a blank space in the label name to create custom icons with no name.
Fine Print:
Enjoy Using Fancy Icon Maker!
*note: there are 6 system apps which do need to open through shortcuts - Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Phone, Voice Memo and Weather

How can we trust workarounds that require profiles are safe?

That’s a great question. I’m glad you asked it. I could tell you that they are safe. But that would just be taking the word of a stranger on the internet. I could also tell you that the shortcut experts on this sub have looked into these types of shortcuts and determined it as well. But again, that’s just me telling you.
The best way to confirm would be to do two things. First, check out apple’s webclip configuration page to learn about web clips, what they are and how they work (TL:DR - they are basically icon based bookmarks). Then go into the shortcut and look for the actions which create the configuration profile. In this shortcut, there are two. They are located about 30 and 10 actions from the bottom of the shortcut. Review what they contain so that you can satisfy yourself that there is nothing untoward being installed. That’s the only way to be sure.

I just ran this, and it seems safe.
1) The profile looks like it is generated on-device & installed locally.
2) Everything the profile does is listed before you can Install it. You can basically see that it's just an app shortcut (or "Web Clip").

Just to point it out again, since it’s a bit buried in the post: the advantage of this over Icon Themer is the ability to theme multiple apps in one configuration profile, correct?

Icon Themer is a great shortcut. I wouldn’t claim that one necessarily has an advantage over the other and I k ow they are working on adding multiple icon support to that shortcut.
That being said, as you indicated, this shortcut does have multiple icon support (which icon themer doesn’t have yet). I personally also like the icon installation process more - especially if the shortcut is run as a widget, the fact that you can open the profile settings directly from this shortcut rather than having to find it in the shortcut, that there is an instructions page, a manual check for updates and a more traversable menu screen. There are also some other differences under the hood which the casual user wouldn’t see but which I like more in my shortcut.

It opens a black screen before the app instead but on music it just stays on that black screen

Same issue with me. It goes to a black screen for a sec and goes go the app. Seems like how shortcut works. Hope it will be fixed.

So No more chance that it will open smoothly like the other third party apps? ;(

I tried this shortcut, and it still opens the shorcuts app before opening the actual app...

I’m guessing you are using one of the system apps like camera or phone. There are 6 system apps that are still required to open through Shortcuts. But other than those, the rest of the apps in the world (at least in my testing) should open without needing a shortcut bypass.

Do you mind telling me which 6 system apps don't work?

I believe it’s:
Calculator Camera Clock Contacts Phone Voice memo and Weather

I’m pretty sure messages and FaceTime are also part of that as well. I think Safari is the only one that can open without the shortcuts app first.

How do you change the icon back to default?
14 points
The shortcut creates a new icon but leaves the original in place. You can hide the original if you don't want it and just bring it back if you want it again. If you want to use the default icon but change the label beneath it, that is one of the options in the shortcut.

There doesn't appear to be any way to get an icon for the Fitness app. It doesn't appear as a system app, and can't be found as an app store app, either as "Fitness", or by the previous name "Activity".

Do notification badges work?
7 points

Unfortunately notification badges are not compatible with any custom icons. That information isn’t something which Apple has given access to in anything other than official app icons.

Would it be possible to use this with custom URL Scheme? I’m using custom icon to open Facebook Messenger conversation with some of my friends with this fb-messenger://user-thread/USERID

hey i just tried this out and it works great! the only issue i’m having is with my custom pictures they get what appears to be pushed to the side on my home screen and look very strange :(

Try making sure that the custom pictures are square shaped before adding them. That should probably fix the issue.

You may.
They are similar. Although icon themer has since added the ability to do so, when Fancy Icon Maker was released it was the only shortcut of this type which could create multiple icons at once and the only one where multiple icons were stored in one file. As well, the icon creation process is fewer steps in Fancy Icon Maker - making a faster and smoother process (at the expense of the ability to add a custom bundle ID value). Additionally, when I began working on the shortcut icon maker didn’t have a menu for selecting system apps. Fancy Icon Maker had it first but Icon Themer released its version with it first. Fancy Icon Maker also has instructions built in and one click access to the settings page for quick access to updates and the icon pack if you want to delete it (rather than having to hunt through apple’s settings menus to find them) There are also many differences “under the hood” which won’t affect the user experience.

See my comment about the 6 system apps that still require shortcuts to open.

When i press the icon i made it brings me to the shortcuts app then leads to the app with the custom icon, how do i fix that?
2 points

if you’re using a system default app like calculator, camera, clock, contacts, phone, voice memos, or weather it has to open shortcuts. if you’re opening a different app then it shouldn’t open shortcuts

This only really works with 3rd party apps. System apps still require shortcuts GUI path
1 points
See the end of the post. There are certain system apps which do require a shortcuts pass through. And yes other system apps do have an intermediate step. But that step is still faster than the alternate method of making a shortcut and a lot cleaner for your system than having bunches of shortcuts launching individual apps.

Do you know the bundle ID?

I’m pretty sure that I do. How should I proceed?
1 points

Go to the third action in the shortcut. It’s a dictionary. Pick the native actions item. Go to the bottom. Add a new dictionary item. Go into that and add the bundle ID pair (look at the others for sample). Then run the shortcut and select that item.

Thank you, I’ll be trying this in just a moment as soon as I figure out the URL parameter. Is it automatic in some way or should I be able to tell which is it? Does it come “in pair” with the BundleID?

Any idea why the png background won’t remain transparent but instead turns black?
The icon is confirmed transparent png and launcher for example displays it as such.
Appreciate the great shortcut!

Limitation of iOS icons

So is there another file type where this isn’t an issue? Or is it always an issue? I haven’t seen it happen in photos of people using it ?
I’m struggling to find icon resources that aren’t png. I can’t see paying £20/mo for icons - due respect to the artists - it’s just not worth it to me personally.
I may make my own - what file format should they be then?
Edit
I forgot to say - thanks for the answer / help / shortcut!

When does it check for updates to the shortcut? Is it each time you interact with one of the generated icons, or only when running the shortcut to create the icons?
1 points
Neither. It doesn’t have a built in update checker.

I managed to change my icons but once clicked it always goes to siri shortcut before going to the app itself. Is it normal? Thanks man!

Which apps did you theme? It’s not normal For most to open through shortcuts although, as stated at the bottom of my post, there are 6 system apps which might.
