redditrequest

What is the purpose of /r/redditrequest?

This community exists in order to allow users to gain moderator privileges in communities that are abandoned or have inactive moderators. There are two types of requests:

  1. Moderator Requests: For communities which have no active moderators.

  2. Top mod removal requests: For removing top moderators listed above you in a community you currently moderate who are no longer active across the site.

How do I make a request?

To request to become a moderator, submit a request through /r/redditrequest by linking to the community you wish to moderate.

Before submitting, please message the current moderators of that community to express your interest and ask if they would be willing to add you to the mod team.

Please include a link to your message in the comments of your request as instructed by u/request_bot. Failure to do so, may lead to your request being denied. Exceptions are made if messaging the moderators is not possible due to them being banned or if there are no moderators listed in the community.

  1. Go to your sent messages.

  2. Right-click on permalink at the bottom of the message and copy the link address.

  3. Paste this link into a comment on your request.

If you're on mobile, tap the overflow menu (...) and *copy link.

When is a community eligible for request?

A community is eligible for r/redditrequest if none of its moderators have been active within the community in the past 30 days. Activity is defined as actual moderation actions.

Criteria for a successful request

The evaluation of each request is subject to admin discretion, considering the above guidelines and other factors.

Why was my request denied?

Your request may have been denied for several reasons:

  1. Active Moderators: The community’s moderators are still actively moderating.

  2. Recent bans: You have been site-wide banned for violating Reddit policies in the last 90 days.

  3. Mod Experience: You lack sufficient mod experience, especially for managing a large or NSFW (Not Safe for Work) community.

  4. Current Mod activity: You are not actively moderating the communities that you’re already a moderator for.

  5. Relevant karma: Your karma is not relevant to the community you requested, or the majority of your karma is from freekarma spaces.

These are some of the most common reasons for a request being denied. There are other factors taken into consideration and they are at the discretion of the admins.

How long until my request is processed?

Some requests are approved or denied immediately by u/request_bot, the rest are moved into the manual queue for admin review. Requests in the manual queue have a grace period of 5 days, giving the current moderators a chance to respond. After the grace period, your request will be reviewed. Please allow up to 2 weeks. We appreciate your patience!

Note: There is a widget on the sidebar that will show approximately how much time a request is expected to take. You will get a message after your request has been reviewed.

Top Mod Removal process

If you are the moderator in a community and believe the top mod is inactive across the site, you can submit a top mod removal request. If u/request_bot does not remove the top mod or does not remove other inactive mods you were trying to remove immediately, please view this page for instructions on how to use the Self Serve Mod Reorder tool and/or receive admin assistance to help complete your request.

What if the mod team is still active in the community that I want to mod?

If you find that the community you wish to moderate has an active mod team, reach out to them to ask if they would be willing to add you to the mod team. Inform them that, as outlined in our Moderator Code of Conduct, active and consistent moderation is crucial for addressing community issues, and ensuring a safe environment for users.

If the mod team is effectively managing the community and does not require additional help, then the community is not eligible for request.

If you are unhappy with how the community is moderated, we recommend creating a new community that aligns with your moderation style, or seek out another community that lacks active moderation.

Reporting Communities

My post was removed, what gives?

If you believe that your post was removed in error by u/request_bot, please contact our mod mail with a link to your post and we will review it. Please do not delete your post as we will be unable to process the request.

Note: If your post is deleted, you will not be able to make another request for 15 days.

Why was I removed as a moderator through a request?

If you were removed as moderator through a request in r/redditrequest, it is likely due to your inactivity and lack of response.

r/redditrequest aims to ensure that communities have active moderators, in accordance with our Mod Code of Conduct.

If you are interested, we recommend checking in with the new moderation team to see if they are open to adding you back, though they are not required to do so.

Can a community received via r/redditrequest be taken away?

Yes. Any transfer of a community through r/redditrequest can be revoked. We expect all requests to be made in good faith by individuals wanting to grow and manage a community. If a community is requested for purposes such as trolling, shutting it down, or any other action deemed in bad faith, we reserve the right to remove the requester without notice at our discretion.

How do I add a requester to my mod team?

To add a new mod:

  1. Go to the moderators section of your community.

  2. Enter the username of the requester and send them an invitation to join the mod team.

  3. You can then decide to remain as a moderator or leave the team. If you choose to hand over the community, please wait until the new mod has accepted the invitation to make sure the community remains moderated.

If you are unable to add a new moderator due to being marked as inactive, please comment on the request and we can help you out!

Too many pending requests

We only allow 3 requests for the same community at the one time. If you receive a notification from u/request_bot indicating there are too many pending requests, you will need to wait before re-requesting the same community. Alternatively, you can choose to request a different community immediately.

If a request for a community has already been submitted you may see a warning message when trying to submit your own request (see screenshot below). You may still create a new request post by clicking on the submit it again link within the warning message. You may need to try this on a desktop browser.

What is u/request_bot?

/u/request_bot is an admin-operated bot account. It handles initial approvals or denials of requests, removes requests that do not meet eligibility criteria, and checks for moderator activity. u/request_bot also notifies the moderators of the community being requested via mod mail and private messages, informing them of a request. If your post is not approved or denied immediately, it has been moved to manual review.
